what questions does the book raise for you. What issues are addressed or ignored in the text?

the questions that the book raises for me are where is Pi from also why was he in mexico and then canada another problem is he wants to swim but his family doesn't swim. The issues that the books addresses are that the main character has a problem with sodium and potassium so he has to go to the hospital. The nurses and doctors were very kind to him. Another problem that the book addresses is that his whole family doesn't swim except his family’s good friend mamanji who was a good friend of the family for a while. The problem is that he wants to learn how to swim. The book addresses the problem when the family’s good friend and former pro swimmer help pie learn to swim starting out at the lake and moving to the pools. At the beginning of the book there is a problem that is addressed when he talks about he was helping his broken self with studies. Those are most of the problems and how the book adresses the problems in the book and also a problem that the book ignored.

what would me and the main character ralk about.

Me and the main character would have a lot to talk about because we are very different and we have some things in common. First i would ask him what college is like and how hard it is.Then i would ask him about his to bachelors degrees in zoology and religious studies i think we would have a good conversation about this because i like zoology and it would be fun to learn more about religion.next i think i would ask about what it is like being a scientist and what the people are like. We would defintly talk about what being a good student is like then i would tell him about what a not so good student is like. We would have fun comparing and contrasting lifes especially because he didnt have the best beging and neither did I but we have two totally difrent stories. It would also be intresting to talk about what being in and living in multiple contries is like. One of the things we have in commen is we are difrrent from our familys so we could talk about that. With that long and deep conversation we would become good friends so i would end the conversation there and give him a nice big old hug.

What was the author saying about life and living through this book? In other words, what is the theme of the book? Cite specific examples of how that theme is developed.

I think that so far in the book Life of Pie the theme is even know you don't come from a good background you can still become very successful.I think that this is the theme because pie came from a very painful and hard life and he still went to college in a different county and got to bachelors degrees. “ that pain is like an axe that chops at my heart” this quote shows some of the pain that tie is feeling. Another quote that shows his pain is “ the first time i went to an indian restaurant in canada i used my fingers . the waiter looked at me critically and said “ fresh off the boat are you” i benched”. This shows his pain because the people in canada say things like this to him and it makes him feel bad. “I attended the university of toronto and took a double bachelor's degree”. This showes that through all that pain you can still be succefull. So that is why i think the theme for the life of pie so far is even know you don't come from a good background you can still become very successful.

choose 3 quotes from the section that you read. Copy the quote in one column. Write your analysis of your selections in the other. What are your thoughts, comments, ideas, and understandings about the significance of the chosen parts of the text?

The first quote that i chose from the text that means alot to the text is “ i was named after a swimming pool” this quote was important because the pi’s name is a big part to the story. His name is a big part because his origanal name is Piscine Molitor Patel. He hated his name because kids used to call him pising so when he moved to a new school he told everyone his name was pi.”It was a huge zoo, spread over numberless acres”. This quote means alot because him living on a zoo will become very important as the story goes on.” My majors were religious studies and zoology.” in this quote pi tells us about his major and later on in the book these majors will become important.

If your book has a main character, does he/she change over the course of the text? If so, why and how?

In the book life of pi by yann martel the main character pi changes a little bit so far in the book. In the beginning of the book he went to school and got bullied a lot because of his name which was Piscine Molitor Patel so all the kids called him pissing so when he moved to a new school he told everyone to call him pi so no one would make fun of him. He also changed the way his family lived because he was the first one in his family that wanted to learn to how to swim and was the first one in his family to actually learn to swim. Its surprising that pi was named after a swimming pool because his parents never swam before. He also changed the way his family was because he went to college and got two bachlers degrees in religion studys and zooligy. Those are some of the ways that the main character pi has changed so far in the book.

Compare where you live with the neighborhood, town or city in the book. Would you rather live in the place where this story takes place? Why or why not?

In the book life of pi by yann martel pi lives in india on a zoo. Me and the main character live in two very different places. I think that i would rather live her where i live now. One of the reasons i wouldn't want to live in india is because first i like our food here better. I guess that me and i don't live in two totally different places because he lives on a farm and i don't exactly live in the middle of a city so i see a lot of wild life but not as much as him. Another reason that i would rather live here is because pi has to do a lot of physical labor even though he is still young. I would like to visit india just to explore new places. Also i would be fun see all the different animals every day at your own zoo. Other than that i think i like everything better here like we have more sports and you're not as controlled as you would be in india. So those are the main reson that i like where i live here better than where pi lives.

Describe a conflict and identify it as either internal or external. Tell why you chose that label.

In the novel life of pi by yawnn martel there are many conflicts in the book. I think most of the problems are external but there are some in ternal problems. Pi faces so many conflicts in this book that it hard to count. Pi’s conflits start with his name early in the book and go all the way until the end of the book when he is stranded out on the middle of the ocean with a bengal tigar. “I spent my last year at St. Joseph's School feeling like the persecuted”. Everyone mad fun of pi for his name at his school this an external conflict. When pi moved schools he solves this conflict by telling eveyone his name was just pi instead of Piscine Molitor Patel. I chos ethis as an external conflict because the conflict is between the kids and teachers in his school and him. “I laughed. I knew it. I wasn't hearing voices. I hadn't gone mad. It was Richard Parker who was speaking to me!” this is an internal problem because in the middle of the ocean he is going vrazt and thinks he hears voices then he thinks he is talking to the tiger on the boat. I think this an internal problem because the problem is all in his mind. He fianlly wakes up from this problem and relizes that he was going crazy that is how he resolved the internal problem. I let myself down the side. “I was afraid to let go, afraid that so close to deliverance, in two feet of water, I would drown.” this is an external conflict. Pi is so weak that he can barely let go of the boat because he is afriad he will drowned in only 2 feet of water.i think this an external conflict because it is a phisical problem. This problem is resolved when people find him on the beach and help him out of the water and bring him to shelter and food. Those are some of the internal and external problems that have happened in life of pi.
