My opinion is that when Rowans Dad went into the fire in the house and sacrifised his life for his children and the other people blaimed it on Rowan and said he wasn't good enough for them and upset him and he felt left out.

I agree with Savannah that the riddle is mysterious and I also like the noun groups they used for Sheba, thin grey tails around her face, she smelt of ash and dust, old cloth and bitter herbs..
