In the cold dark midst of winter, 

giant spider crabs will congregate

In the thousands at port Phillip bay,

Are they looking for a mate?

Nah, they’re just growing

Larger and larger every year 

And need to shed their outer shell

It’s natural I swear!

They all come together because

Many bodies are better than one

When the sting rays come a-looking

For flesh as sweet as a plum. 

Their skin becomes soft and supple

once they’ve shed their old shells off -

A state where they’re most vulnerable 

For hungry predators to scoff. 

They’ll stay together for some time

Until they harden up once more

And then they’ll go their seperate ways

Leaving behind shells galore

But when and where will all these crabs

Meet again once more?

And for what reason will they meet?

Scientists aren’t sure. 

I’d love a chance to get a look

upon them from ashore,

not enough is known about them 

I have many questions more.
