In this book review by The New York Times, it describes Nick Hall as a 12 year old beast on the field but also a word genius only by the path of his father. Then later, he realizes the power of language and how it can impress a strict teacher, help him on the pitch, and help him get the girl of his dreams. I agree with the book review when it says that Nick thinks words are stupid at first. In the book, Nick doesn't pay attention in english and talks back to his father. He also refuses to read his dad's dictionary. One specific quote from the book that emphasizes this is "Is there a word for how much I hate words?" (Alexander 53). Then later, when Nick meets his dream girl April , he finds out her love for books and words like his father. Then this changes Nick's life and starts to read the dictionary himself and he gets "booked". This book review was great because it portrayed all of Nick's ups and downs. Good job New York Times.

This is my favorite quote and most influential quote from the book. This is because it then leads to Nick standing up to the bullies in school and beating them up. He takes his dad's advice and gets rid of his fears. This is influential to the plot of the book because it basically is resolution to the book. It shows how the conflict of bullying in the book can be solved. It says that if you stand up to the bully, you have won the fight even if lose physically. It connects to life and how to always try things even if you are scared of it. You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. It also exposes the main thinking behind a bully.

This image is a picture of a boy finding the union between two major parts of his life. Soccer and Reading. This exactly relates to Nick Hall's life. He tries to find that middle ground or connection between soccer and words, how it ties in to his life. For example April, his divorcing parents, or standing up to biggest fears like the bullies.

Literary Element-Theme of "Booked"

The theme of this book is a very truthful truth. The only thing to fear is fear itself. This emphasized when Nick's father was giving Mick advice on standing up for himself. He said “Bullies don't like to fight, son. They like to win. Being afraid is normal. The only fight you really have to win is the one against the fear.” (Alexander 115). This shows that the only thing to be scared of is fear because if you are scared of everything, you won't ever get anything accomplished.

The impact of this theme is that Nick finally stands up for himself and fights the bullies. He fights them and even though he loses and gets a bloody nose, he put up a fight. He showed the bullies to not mess with him, and from that day they didn't. This would have never had happened if Nick didn't listen to his dad. If he had kept being fearful, he would have kept being bullied. This is a very valuable theme and everyone should follow this.

I recommend this book to everyone who plays a sport of any kind. This is because no matter how hard you try, managing a sport you are dedicated you and your daily life can often be a challenge. This book can help readers see how Nick connected his love for soccer to his other aspects of life. This book gave me some inspiration to work harder and also give other things a try and be more open-minded. I also recommend this book to teens because it can help maintain a balance of things in life.

In this book, NIck Hall has a passion for soccer. He never even imagined that he would soon become a verbophile. In fact, he even hated words and reading in general. This all changes when he meets the girl of his dreams April. April loves words and english and even the dictionary made by Nick's father. Then Nick gets "booked" and starts developing an interest for words and even finishes reading a whole dictionary. All of this to impress a girl. Will Nick win April. Read the book to find out.
