Through assessement both teacher and student can have feedback for their work in order to find out more about the knowledge that they are trying to get. Many times, though, the assessment's implemention can be a difficult task.

Greece
It seems as though all three kinds of assessment are important to measure knowledge, skills or assess personal progress. School curricula, of course, focus on the summative assessment as a priority. There has been some (slight) progress in the area concerning specific curricula of certain subjects. For instance, in foreign language teaching in Greek schools an attempt has been made to include self-assessment, via questionnaires and portfolios. Of course, there still is a lot to be done for formative assessment which is so essential for checking the comprehension of concepts and application of skills, and last but not least of the invaluable feedback which we need to improve our teaching methods. Sometimes such assessments are being done instinctively, but we need a more systematic application of criteria in order to improve their reliability and validity. A couple of seminars-courses and workshops would be necessary for this purpose. I would, also, like to stress out the importance of “assessing” the transversal competences and of forming positive attitudes on the part of our students concerning their progress. Curiosity, initiative and creativity or making connections between ideas and solve problems for instance.

This video explains clearly what assessment is. It is very interesting that self-evaluation is considered essential for assessing the key competences. I think that this kind of assessment is scarcely considered by some teachers and by the institution which obliges teachers to give grades according to the performance of the students. I think that too much importance is given to the assessment of learning and not to the process of learning and to self evaluation. However it is also true that it is impossible to follow students properly in overcrowded classrooms.

Formative assessment is the kind of “real time” assessment teachers use to understand how well learners understand a new concept or are to apply a new skill – and provide the learner with feedback on what they still need to do to meet the learning objective. The teacher may adjust teaching approaches to meet learning needs more effectively. An assessment is considered as formative once the gap has been closed and the student has met the objective

Assessment: a big challenge!. The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. Formative assessments help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work.

The teachers in Croatia are very accustomed to the summative assessment enough to formative assessment, but very little to the self assessment. Yet the formative assessment is crucial for the achievement of competences and more the self assessment, because reflection on their own way of learning creates very strong logical connections and helps pupils to improve their learning.
