Photography is a great example of active learning. Most who begin their photography journey, myself included, begin with a camera and a vision instead of a class lecture on how to take a picture. There are so many compositions and subjects to be photographed and that can not be learned from a book, but rather by experience in the field.

Horseback riding is another example of active learning. I give lessons to children teens and adults as well as rehabilitate victims of non-detrimental horse related accidents. In the beginning lesson, I give an overview of the horse riding experience, not with reading material or videos, but in-saddle. As the riders become adjusted to their saddle, I explain basics of how to sit, hold reins, use legs, and other necessities for fun, easy riding, but it depends on the rider to figure out how to accomplish these motions!

I was a senior in my Bioloy class and we had an assignment to complete a word puzzle of the periodic table. The puzzle included hints about elements and we had to figure out the element. It made me engage in the activity by trying to figure the answer out rather than just say I didn't know.

My first grade students had a group work activity revolving around place value. I gave them two cards with a number between 0 and 9 and the students had to put the numbers in whatever order they chose, then use manipulative counters to represent the number they created.

By completing the lesson plan, we are learning teaching strategies and methods of learning through our lesson plan, putting our knowledge to use rather than just memorizing information.

In my psychology class, we were able to choose a mental illness or disorder and write about it. Doing so keeps the learners motivated and engaged in the topic they choose and will ultimately grant students with more knowledge on the topic by dissecting the disorder in its entirety.
