In 2008, Ukraine attempted to join NATO. NATO refused, however, though they would let Ukraine join NATO eventually. Russia has criticized NATO before, and didn't necessarily approve of this decision.

2014

During February of this year, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine started. Russia denies any involvement they have. Russia begins to partially seize control of the Ukrainian government. This also marks the beginning of the period of multiple failed ceasefires (which were supposed to last a while, but didn't). Russia's very first invasion of Ukraine happens.

2015-2017

Russia began having a large presence as an army in Ukraine. They outnumbered Ukraine's troops by a few thousand. In 2015, Russia and Ukraine fought over resources, like power grids and territory. During 2016, the arbitrary detention used by both sides ended. In 2017, it was said that one Ukrainian soldier would die every three days. The Amendments banning the support of Azov were lifted.

The White House gives a speech on issues in the Middle East. However, it primarily focuses on the Israel-Palestine conflict, possibly showing that the US became less concerned about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

2022

Putin gets his first chance to invade Ukraine (on February 24th). He eventually does, with many casualties on both sides. This year also marked the end of the many ceasefires (29, to be exact). Russia's actions include a missile strike on a hospital and forcing people to flee. The US sends some support to Ukraine later in the year, due to it being a dire situation.

2021

Russia builds up their military occupation near Ukraine (March-April), specifically at the border. A second buildup happened from October to December. Despite his soldiers not being prepared to fight, Putin planned for a full-scale invasion. In December, the US learned of these plans and sent out the information about them.
