-Byzantine people lost control of shipping due to the Muslim people who continually harassed the traders.

- The church was directly connected with the one main ruler, or king, who had control over all of the region in most aspects.

- Sometimes women held the throne demonstrating the more equal system of life in the byzantine Empire.

-Military was common in the region, and much like other empires the byzantine believed in rewarding soldiers with land grants for their service.

- The empire had a continuous fall of rulers, but never faced a full depression.

- Bureaucracy was the type of government that these people follow.

- Byzantine comes from the Byzantium land ruled by Byzas.

- The Byzantine was secluded due to their decisions in contradicting the Holy Roman Church.

- The empire ended up falling because they were weakened by the crusades.

Significance: This region was significant politically because they were one of the few areas who did not conform to the religious and political ideas surrounding them. As a result they created a unique political system different from every other region around them involved in the Holy Roman Empire.

-Even though the empire had split religions, the main religion they had was Christianity. The emperor was Christian, and the link between church and the state was really close.

-Monasteries were used for monks and nuns to live under religious vows.

-Iconoclasm is the idea that artists should not be able to draw or paint holy peoples. Emperor Leo III implemented this, and destroyed many pieces of art to adhere to the second commandment.

-These people did not believe in the papacy, and as a result split from the Roman Catholic ideas in Constantinople.

Significance: Religiously these people created the form of Christianity known as Orthodox Christianity. This was significant because the religion that thrived in this culture has lived on because of these people and their beliefs.
