Fact: Today, the Mississippi River powers a significant segment of the economy in the upper Midwest. Barges and their tows move approximately 175 million tons of freight each year on the upper Mississippi through a system of 29 locks and dams.

Tourists: Along the river there are many museums and educational centers. There are also many opportunities for fishing, birdwatching, hiking, and boating along the river.

Historical Connection: In the past, Native Americans lived along its banks and used the river for sustenance and transportation. Early European explorers used the Mississippi to explore the interior and the northern reaches of what was to become the United States. There were also trade routes set along the river banks, commonly used by fur traders.

In New York, you’ll find almost every race and language, which is why it is called “the melting pot of the world.” The city is made up of 5 boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.

Fact: In the Marvel universe, New York City is home to Peter Parker and his alter ego, Spiderman. In fact, Peter Parker was born and raised in Queens.

Tourism: New York City is home to the famous Times Square, where thousands of tourists come to visit all year round. In the city you’ll find other attractions like Broadway, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and lots of shopping. Many movies are also set and filmed in the city.

Historical Connection: Ellis Island is a historical site that opened in 1892 as an immigration station, a purpose it served for more than 60 years until it closed in 1954. Located at the mouth of Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, Ellis Island saw over twelve million immigrants pass through its doors. It has been estimated that close to 40 percent of all current U.S. citizens can trace at least one of their ancestors to Ellis Island.

It is situated in the northwest part of the state at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Chattahoochee River.

Fact: Atlanta is home to 71 streets with a variation of the word “Peachtree” in their names: Peachtree Avenue, Peachtree Plaza, etc… however, there are no peach trees in Atlanta, nor are peach trees native to the area! The name “peachtree” evolved from “pitch tree,” which is what the native pine trees were called because of their sticky sap.

Tourism: Atlanta is becoming the "Hollywood of the South" as more productions are being filmed in Georgia. Many people travel to Atlanta through the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which is one of the busiest in the world.

Historical Connection: During the Civil War, the city was burned and almost completely destroyed while occupied by Gen. William T. Sherman's troops in Nov. 1864. It was rebuilt after the war and grew rapidly due to the expansion of the railroads in the southwest.
