Crimes of The Commoners

According to "Elizabethan Crime and Punishment". Many crimes committed by commoners were committed to stay out of poverty.
1.Theft- Theft for stealing anything over 5 pence resulted in hanging. This was really rough for poor people who were starving. Just stealing small things such as bird eggs could result in death.
     2. Poaching- Punishment for poaching crimes were different according to when the crime was committed. Poaching at night was a death sentence while poaching during the day was not.
3. Begging- Begging was a serious crime during this time. The Elizabethan government made begging a crime. Poor beggars would be beaten until they reached the stones that mark the towns boundary. The beatings were bloody and merciless and people who were caught begging over and over could go to prison or even hanged for it.
As said in "Different Kinds of Elizabethan Torture" the most common torture techniques were Stretching, Burning, Drowning, and Beating.

Beheading was the most used and most scared of in this case. As stated in "Elizabethan Crime and Punishment". "The punishment of Death by the ax was a terrifying prospect. The Elizabethan executioners often took several blows before the head was finally severed." These executions would happen in public places for people to watch. After the head is chopped off, the executioner would hold the head by the hair and show it to the crowd. The consciousness of the body was still there for at least 8 seconds after the beheading. The heads of the victims would then get placed on stakes on places like the London Bridge.

Nowadays there can't be severe punishments like that in our country. The Justice system of the Elizabethan Era was very brutal. Jail cells held people until they could be held in trial. Where here, There can't be executions for somebody stealing.

Traveling without a License was very Dangerous during this time. People who had to travel had to get a license which costed a quite a bit of money. As stated in William Shakespeare info, "This ensured that disease and the plague would not spread." This also kept homeless people of each town in that town. This made things hard for poor people who wanted to move.

Anyone who needed to travel to earn their living, such as actors, were treated with suspicion and could be expected to be accused of crimes." Actors were treated almost as if they were beggars or thieves. Actors that were accused of real or imaginary crimes were often branded by a hot iron.

According to Liza Picard, a woman sentenced to death but was pregnant could "Plead her belly" which let that woman live until the baby was born. People thought that it would be wrong to take both the child's and the mom's life. Sometimes the mom could get lost in the system and live a little longer. When religious priests did a crime that was punishable by death, he could "claim his book" which allowed him to get branded on the hand rather than killed. This showed that his immunity was gone. This was called Benefit of the Clergy.
