"I have been thinking about this machine. I have been thinking about how it will carry you away and keep you here at the same time" - The director uses this dialogue from Trywell to William as an analogy to suggest that western science does not mean people have to abandon their homes, culture and traditions but that it can be used sympathetically to sustain these things, whilst still enabling personal growth.

- This implicates the desperateness of the situation that many live in. Their is so much need, so much so that many have to sacrifice things in the long term to achieve survival in the sort term. This surviving day by day mentality makes it difficult to plan for the future. This is a vicious cycle, that keeps much of the poor in poverty. This dialogue indicates to the viewer what has been mentioned above and is an attempt by the Director to understand the situations in societies unlike their own.
