I connected with this as a future teacher because I can see how engaging place-based learning is, especially in teaching about their communities. Overall, I think that place-based learning is a great way to engage students in content because it relates directly to their lives, including their communities. It allows children to see their active role in solving problems within their community. The class in the video did this by providing students with problems that they are expected to solve, specifically though looking at data of wildfires in the community. I think place-based learning is an interesting way to incorporate a child's responsibilities or place within a community in their curriculum for school to attach more meaning to their learning. I wonder how this can be applied to other courses, including ELA, mathematics, science, or social studies content.

I connect to these resources by having a personal connection to it by going and learning somewhere else that isn't a classroom. Back when I was in school I learned so much by going on field trips to many different places and learning more about the topic of what we are learning. It helped me make a personal connection to it and without me knowing I was learning from it. It is super beneficial for me and other students as well. What I connect is by remembering my Washington DC field trip in 8th grade. I connected with it when we saw the battle ground of Gettysburg. The stories the tour guides would tell really made you feel a connection that you cant get when you read it out of a book. I haven't visited the 9/11 memorial but I definitely want to just to have a better understanding.

Planning trips to parks and other locations can take a lot of time, and I’m not sure if the benefits of these experiences outweigh the time spent traveling. I connected with the idea that when children are being engaged within the curriculum, more information will be retained through them. Whenever it comes to learning, I tend to be more present and retain more information when I enjoy the topic I am learning. Field trips allow there to be more hands-on engagement for the students. Back in first grade, we went on a field trip to Hale Farm during the time we were talking about early Ohio life. It was hard to fully understand what the teacher was talking about when it came to life at the time until we were able to go there and physically spend a day back in time completing some of the chores required of those children at the time. I believe this would be a virtual option to include within my own classroom to help children understand hard-to-grasp ideas.

I believe that place-based education is a positive thing. Students tend to have a hard time when it comes to learning because they don't understand how it is going to be used later in their lives. Using place-based education allows the students to understand their learning does have meaning and is something connected to the world, allowing them to gain a bigger sense that it is important to learn this. Second, place-based education allows student to be in charge of their own learning. With this process, students are the ones doing the actual steps into figuring out the end goal of the learning material. This allows the student to be in charge of pacing and guiding themself in a way that in the end makes it more beneficial to that student's learning style.
