Heaney conveys the message that admiration lasts between him and his dad through the use of simile and diction to show that admiration is universal.
He uses depictions of his dad working on the farm and compares him to boats and sailing. This shows that his dad is similar to a navigator or captain so that he is guiding Heaney. The rhyme scheme is very regular ABAB to mimick ploughing and the straight parallel furrows that his dad digs. Heaney states that he wanted to be like his dad and follow him to contrast his dad wanting to following him around at the end. This could mean that his dad is clutching on to him because he has grown distant away from his dad :(
