Analysis:

Heaney conveys the message that admiration lasts between him and his dad through the use of simile and diction to show that admiration is universal.
He uses depictions of his dad working on the farm and compares him to boats and sailing. This shows that his dad is similar to a navigator or captain so that he is guiding Heaney. The rhyme scheme is very regular ABAB to mimick ploughing and the straight parallel furrows that his dad digs. Heaney states that he wanted to be like his dad and follow him to contrast his dad wanting to following him around at the end. This could mean that his dad is clutching on to him because he has grown distant away from his dad :(

The focus was on how Heaney describes farming as a life of hardship and great difficulty. He then goes and praises his father for having lived such a hard life as a farmer for so long. He does this through the extensive use of visual imagery which acts to describe the various deeds in which a farmer must complete in his or her daily life. He also uses specific diction to emphasize the hardships of the farming life. However, specifically in stanza 5 & 6, the tone used is that of admiration to suggest that he admires his father and grandfather for their skill and hard working character.

The poem focuses on the action of digging and how it relates to his family history and identity in the present. As the poem progresses we see how his father and grandfather both had to work to live in the times that they did. They had to overcome hardships and live in a different and simplistic world. Meanwhile Heaney along with his pen have to fight the civil war that rages on in the North. His identity crisisis unfolded through the glorification of a strong male role in his life...his father and grandfather. When he had been younger he had witnessed how his father and grandfather had both been farmers and suddenly in the present he was merely a poet. He wants to make reasons for why he is the way he is currently and that is digging as a farmer vs digging deep within himself as a poet in the present.

In the "Death of a Naturalist", Heaney explores the concept of the gradual loss of innocence throughout the process of growing up. The character depicted in the poem goes through this development, starting out the poem as a curious child full of wonderment and then slowly turning distrustful and weary of the real world by the end. Heaney explores this loss of innocence through his use of imagery, figurative language, and contrasting tones between stanzas.
