Garnet, from a popular TV show on Cartoon Network, is my idea of a self reliant individual. She is composed, powerful, and confident. She is definitely the wisest of all the characters on the show. "Stronger Than You" a song sung by Garnet herself has some parallels to Emerson's essay. The lyrics in the song "You're not gonna stop what we made together. We are gonna stay like this forever. If you break us apart we'll just back newer. " This parallels to Emerson's "Self Reliance" through this connection in his essay, "The power which resides in him is new in nature, and but he knows... nor does he know until he has tried." The connection here is, the power Garnet uses that keeps her going is part of nature: love. Vincent Van Gogh was a brilliant painter at the time but no one else thought so. Van Gogh may have been diagnosed with a mental illness which led to the belief  that his paintings could be classified as disturbing.
