Broken Promises

"Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?" There were a lot of broken promises throughout Jeannette's life, one of them was her dad saying he'd stop drinking. Jeannette asked her dad to stop as a birthday gift, in a way I believe it opened Rex's eyes because she was only ten at the time but addiction kept winning. He only lasted a couple months and then it was the same thing all over again.

"I'm not upset because I'll miss you, I'm upset because you get to go to New York and I'm stuck here. It's not fair." Rose Mary and Rex were narcasictic. There were so many times where they only did things that were to benefit themselves and not their kids. In this quote, Rose Mary isn't even proud of her daughters for wanting better things. Instead, she's upset that they're leaving and she's not.

Chaos vs Order

"She positively glowed as she told me about the hot meals and hot showers." This was Jeannette's reactions of Lori when she came home from summer camp. "Mom came home too. She seemed different too." While Lori and Rose Mary were away from Welch, they were happy and were getting the needed resources they lacked back home. Meanwhile, although Jeanette was washing clothes, cleaning the house and feeding her siblings, it was still difficult because Rex continued to ask for money, so things kept being chaotic. This picture relates to chaos and order because the environment was different when somebody actually tried and when they didn't. It also shows how there's two different kind of people and in this situation, the parents were the chaotic, unorganized ones.

Fantasy vs Reality

"I'd broken one of our unspoken rules: We were always supposed to pretend our life was one long incredibly fun adventure." In this quote, Rose Mary gets mad at her kids for eating the margarine because they were hungry and she claimed she was going to make bread with it even though they didn't even have the other ingredients. Their parents acted like things were always okay, and if the kids were hungry, they wouldn't say anything to avoid their parents from fighting. The picture is a glass castle, Rex told them he was going to build them a beautiful house that he had in his head but over time, they stopped hearing about it. The picture and quote relate to the theme because they're both examples of fantasy and reality in their lives.

Acceptance

"Life with your father was never boring." This picture is based off of when Rex took the kids to the Zoo but instead of watching from a distance, he let his them stand inside the cage with the cheetah. This is an example of acceptance because in the book and during interviews, Jeannette just laughs at these memories with no hate. She says that she couldn't expect her mother to take care of them if she could't even take care of herself. The quote was said at the end of the book after Rex had died and they were laughing, looking back on memories.

"We told Brian about the escape fund, and he pitched in, even though we hadn't included him in our plans because he was only in the seventh grade." This family had a lot struggles but there was no doubt that all four siblings had each others back. This picture relates to the quote because not even their parents helped them out to save money and move out, in fact Rex ended up stealing their money. So, yes they're related but that didn't necessarily mean anything to Rose Mary and Rex.
