Nelson Mandela was born with the name Rolihlahla Mandela (meaning “troublemaker”). When he was 7 years’ old he got given the name Nelson at school. He was born on July 18th 1918 into a royal family in south Africa (Transkei), that consisted of 13 children as nelsons father had 4 wives. At age 12 wealthy relatives took custody due to the death of his father. He has had many accomplishments as he was a nonviolence anti-apartheids activist, politician, philanthropist (a person very generous person who gives back to the poor/less fortunate) he was also the first black president of South Africa. From 1994 to 1999 Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s first black president. For political offences Mandela spent 27 years in prison. The “Mandela effect” is a big thing that happened due to people thinking that Nelson passed away in prison. People were adamant that they saw clips of this funeral on tv, he passed away on the 5th December 2013.

Q.2 part 1 How has their work encouraged a more open-minded view on situations rather than a close-minded and controlled view?

Being the first black president in South Africa that would have opened people’s minds and inspired others to start thinking outside of the box and to change the world for the better. He changed the thinking of many South Africans and impacted their lives tremendously, they also refer to him as their country’s “greatest son”. A song was made to show/protest against Mandela going to jail with lyrics such as ‘I say Free Nelson Mandela, I’m begging you, Free Nelson Mandela”. He impacted people’s minds for the better.

Q.2 part 2 How did they challenge the ‘status quo’, rather than holding onto power through violence?

Nelson Mandela impacted the status quo tremendously by fighting for freedom. He believed that every human deserves freedom and the right to be equal even the white people. He fought for everyone but himself and that’s what made him so different. When Nelson was fighting for equal rights/freedom he in the Rivonia Trial he got arrested for “trying to overthrow the state”. His was meant to spend the rest of his life in life for “terrorist acts” but he got let out after he spent 27 years in jail. There’s no doubt about it that he challenged the status quo, he fought for something so touchy and something that was never really thought of which is amazing.

He took many risks, he risked his life and the wellbeing of himself for others. He helped others by standing up/speaking up to give everyone the best life where everything is equal. He sacrificed himself and wanted to change everyone’s worldview for the better. Due to him fighting for equality and freedom for all he did get placed in prison which just shows how much he risked. The made two different sides (black and white) realise just how much they needed each other.

Nelson Mandela embraced his enemies. He had great willingness to forgive, he believed that “forgiveness is not just a personal or religious matter but can affect the life of a whole nation.” (Anon, 2019). He taught people to love everyone and have peace with everyone. Everyone has enemies. Nelson would have offended people it’s something that just comes with the job. Nelson wanted equality between black and white people, the white people would have been offended because back in those days’ white people didn’t know anything other than that they were superior. He said "while it is important to forgive, history must never forget it's troubled past."

Nelson Mandela is the
epitome of a truly great change agent. He showed everyone to stand up for what they believe in and that if you really want something there is no harm in going for it. The thing that inspires me most is how much one person can make such a massive impact on the world. Nelson has challenged my worldview and made me show more gratitude for people who have changed the world for the better.

No one is perfect everyone has their flaws. He had many shortcomings and made many mistakes along the path of his life (Bikitsha, 2019). The things nelson did had a very big impact. He isn’t perfect as he would have made lots of mistakes throughout his life. “I’m an ordinary person, I have made serious mistakes, I have serious weaknesses.” – Nelson Mandela. He acknowledges the fact that no one is perfect. When he was president he is bound to make mistakes.
