The Indus dolphin has the long, pointed nose characteristic of all river dolphins. The teeth are visible in both the upper and lower jaws even when the mouth is closed. The teeth of young animals are almost an inch long, thin and curved; however, as animals age the teeth undergo considerable changes and in mature adults become square, bony, flat disks. The snout thickens towards its end. The species does not have a crystalline eye lens, rendering it effectively blind, although it may still be able to detect the intensity and direction of light. Navigation and hunting are carried out using echolocation. The body is a brownish color and stocky at the middle. The species has a small triangular lump in place of a dorsal fin. The flippers and tail are thin and large in relation to the body size, which is about 2–2.2 m (6 ft 7 in – 7 ft 3 in) in males and 2.4–2.6 m (7 ft 10 in – 8 ft 6 in) in females. The oldest recorded animal was a 28-year-old male 199 cm (78 in) in length.[6] Mature adult females are larger than males. Sexual dimorphism is expressed after females reach about 150 cm (59 in); the female rostrum continues to grow after the male

Protecting dolphins involves a combination of conservation efforts, policy changes, and public awareness. Here are some key actions to help safeguard these intelligent marine mammals:

Support Marine Protected Areas: Advocate for and support the creation and maintenance of marine protected areas (MPAs) where dolphins and other marine life can thrive without the pressures of commercial fishing and other harmful activities.

Reduce Bycatch: Encourage sustainable fishing practices that minimize bycatch, which is the capture of unintended species like dolphins in fishing gear. This can involve supporting businesses and fisheries that use dolphin-safe practices and technologies.

Combat Climate Change: Climate change affects ocean temperatures, food availability, and habitat conditions. Reducing your carbon footprint, supporting renewable energy, and advocating for climate policies can help mitigate these impacts on dolphin populations.

Raise Awareness: Educate others about the challenges dolphins face and promote responsible behavior around marine environments. Public awareness campaigns can drive more people to take action and support conservation efforts.

Support Ethical Wildlife Tourism: If you participate in dolphin-watching tours, choose operators who follow ethical guidelines that ensure the safety and well-being of the animals. Avoid interactions that could stress or harm the dolphins.

Advocate for Legislation: Support laws and policies that protect marine life and habitats. This can include advocating for bans on harmful practices such as dolphin hunts or the use of destructive fishing methods.

Participate in Clean-Up Efforts: Engage in or support ocean clean-up initiatives to reduce pollution that can harm dolphins. Marine debris, including plastics and chemicals, can have serious impacts on their health and habitat.

Support Research: Contribute to or support organizations and institutions that conduct research on dolphin populations, behavior, and health. Research helps inform effective conservation strategies and policies.

Avoid Products Linked to Dolphin Harm: Be mindful of products and companies that contribute to practices harmful to dolphins, such as those involved in the dolphin meat trade or entertainment industries that exploit dolphins.

Promote Rescue and Rehabilitation: Support or volunteer with organizations dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured or stranded dolphins.

By combining these efforts and working together, we can help ensure a safer future for dolphins and other marine life.
