The question, however, remains: does hashtag activism truly carry a deeper meaning? Personally speaking, I would argue that while hashtag activism is beneficial for awareness and financial aid(s) of some sort, it is often misused and taken advantage of in all the wrong ways in terms of activism. Quite often, it is compromised and becomes a battleground, rather than a form of peacemaking or sacred "Safe spot". 1 Disadvantage: While social activism may bring people together in the real world, on the internet, nobody is safe. Instances of harsh language, foul/offensive/racist behavior, or derogatory behavior in general is MUCH more common, as people are typing from the comfort of their computer screens, behind closed doors.
