Overall, I was really shocked and disgusted by the site of yesterday's events. I think that the last time a group of individuals were in the capitol against other people's wishes or permission was in 1812 (and it was the british), so this was obviously a very pivotal moment. I also think that a lot of the frustration and actions from yesterday stem from divisive complications within the two party system. Also, when talks of invoking the 25th amendment emerged, I started to draw a few similarities between yesterday's events and the watergate scandal with President Nixon. I also think that procedural objections in congress (which took place later in the night) would have alone been more effective and encouraged more to listen rather than holding this rally and essentially encouraging people to storm our nation's capitol. Another horrifying site were the people reenacting George Floyd's death, and certain cops who turned a blind eye to the protestors/rioters

I'm really devastated about the events that transpired yesterday, not only because of the damage done, but also because I'm not surprised. Our nation has proved to be problematic throughout recent years, and this just happens to be another page in the list of problems. I mean the public is calling it an act of terrorism, an INTERNAL act of terrorism. We can't put this behind us, and we have to recognize that it's going to take years of healing to recover as a nation. Without a doubt, this day will forever be notorious.

One of the things that most disappointed me was that lawmakers, as well as security forces, reacted late rather than addressing the issue before it was inflamed. The sentiments that led to the insurrection have been festering for months and years, and many politicians have openly supported them up until today. In my view, disavowing them now is too late, they should have disavowed them before this kind of thing happened.
Our political culture today seems to be very reactive rather than proactive: we wait for something terrible to happen and only then do we react. I'm not particularly impressed by those who took so long to disavow extremism. It shouldn't take an act of violence against the state to convince you.

I was really horrified by the events that occurred yesterday. I was shocked that this group of people thought illegally storming into the capital was an okay thing to do, but I was more disgusted by the difference in treatment of this group of rioters versus the Black Lives Matter protestors. I thought a lot about why this armed group was almost welcomed into the capital, whereas peaceful Black Lives Matter protestors were attacked and harmed. This event made me scared for the nation's future, especially for the next 2 weeks.

I think that at the moment it seems rather surreal. It reminds me of the movie–Olympus has fallen. But after giving this some time, the reality of this situation has sunk in and it is rather absurd. It, in my perspective, just doesn't make sense how this was even allowed–which pushes that sense of disbelief in my own mind further. Psychoanalytically, I think the constant onslaught of horrific acts that have occured in the last couple of months, or even the last year, has caused our society to become desensitized to these kinds of acts which is both alarming and unacceptable. I think this desensitization makes us as a society feel powerless because there is an evident theme of prejudice clear from these acts.

After seeing the events that took place in DC yesterday, I was not only shocked but also scared for our nation's future. The last time divisions between groups were this extreme, there was a civil war raging in our country. Regardless of political views, the actions of this group of people should instill fear in everybody. Also, I am just devastated that we as a nation have let the divisions in our country become this harsh, and have encouraged partisanship to the point of (what seems like) no return

At first, what was going down in Washington D.C. didn't really click with me immediately cause it seemed so unreal and out of the ordinary. It has started to set in more and I've come to realize that the ignorance fueling the riots is what is really disappointing and saddening.

I was just completely shocked and surprised by what happened yesterday, but more than anything I was disappointed in our country. Factions are inevitable, but this violent group was encouraged by our president who is leaving the country in a very divided manner. President Trump caused further division between the parties and there are radical groups on each side that are defining each party. At this point, I am also worried if there will be worse and more widespread violence.

The most important thing that this event highlights is the clear racism that is present in our country, especially in law enforcement. Black Lives Matter protests were condemned and disregarded by many while they were protesting racial injustice and discrimination in our country; our President calls them thugs. When domestic terrorists invade the Capitol in an attempt to stop the certification of the election results, because they were mislead by the President to think there was fraud, things look completely different. Police are soft, forgiving. The order for National Guard is initially rejected. The President issues a statement saying "we love you" to the rioters. I would say "if the protestors were black, then things would be different," but it is not a hypothetical situation. Police handled BLM protests with much more violence and assertion, further emphasizing the racial injustice that plagues our nation.

I was overall in shock by all the events that took place yesterday. If the people who stormed the capitol yesterday had been people of color, there would have been extreme measures of force taken and the fact that so many of these men were able to invade the building with such ease just goes to show the extent of white privilige in America. Further, it is concerning to see that the leader of our country has not spoken out to condemn the events that occurred yesterday and continues to speak of it with a passive attitude.

Part of the shock comes from the chaos itself happening in DC, but there's also the government and the police's hypocrisy.
