How people think of themselves and what they think are their goals in life are determined during their childhood.

1. I think historically gender stereotypes have been ingrained a lot in the past, causing people who were children long ago to have these potentially negative stereotypes, such as 60+ aged people. Some social stereotypes include that a woman should be forced into nurturing children and a man is worthless if not in the labor force to provide for his family. All these social and cultural factors led these stereotypes to seep into the books written a few decades ago.

2. I think my identity is shaped by some stereotypes such as my representation on the emotions shown by the different genders. I thought that boys rarely cry and only cry when a family member dies or loses a job, while girls are free to cry. While now I realize this is absurd, I still believe that it is kind of annoying if someone is overly emotional and cries over not getting an extra cookie.

1. It is historically known that society was originally (much more often than not) a patriarchy, where societal constructs favored men and expected them to earn money and provide for their families, while women were domestic and were constrained to the household and the caretaking of the children. Men were seen as aggressive, independent, and emotionless, while women were objectified and seen as dainty, gullible, and sensitive. These stereotypes, unfortunately, continue to "categorize" men and women into their respective gender roles and can be seen in historic texts. However, as society starts to advance, texts also reflect empowerment and the breaking of said gender roles to promote an equal society without pre-disposed assumptions based on gender.

2. It's easy for women to be overlook and scrutinized. My character is often dependent on my first-impressions, since women are judged in an extreme way way any vulnerability is considered "being a push-over", and any independence is considered "being harsh." Which is unfortunate. As a female, it's often the case where I am worried for my own safety as a result of being in a world where women are taken advantage of. But, on the flip side, I'm very lucky to be in a place and have friends who aren't confined to these values

1. Context is very, very important in gender; it's what is considered while writing. Context is like saying, "Considering ...," or "In terms of..."
One may have a different answer to the same question when being asked to take different themes into account or decide something based on a given topic.

Context is also vital for background information. For example, if one were to fall over, the fault would lie under if they were pushed or if he tripped, therefore context would be required; this decision cannot be made without further elaboration on the matter.

2. Due to generalization, it is said or expected for a girl/woman to, for example, be interested in makeup and fashion and be dramatic. This is due to society's vision and the ever-evolving speculation of gender. Although few people disagree with what women should "be," or like, or even "be like," there is still an overall expectation of the usual traits of girls. Even though I consider myself to be girly/a typical girl, everyone has their differences, and I have mine. It's understandable that often one anticipates a girl/woman to behave a certain way and have certain interests, but the perception should be changed to being more open-minded, to girls being unique.

In my opinion, they can be very restricting as they don't allow people to express themselves the way they want to. It stops people from fully understanding themselves, their worth, and their capabilities.

How does context contribute to the representation of gender in text?

Authors either try to replicate the society that already exists in their text or else, write about the change they want to see. For example, we can see how as society is progressing, famous works are starting to include more empowered and strong female characters, as well as male characters that are proud to show off their feminine attributes. We can also see authors including more non-binary characters to start breaking those gender norms as well.

How does context (social, historical, cultural) contribute to the representation of gender in texts?
In history, women are usually represented and dumbed down to dainty, vulnerable, and gullible- often considered the "weaker" gender, who had to stay at home, do all the house chores and take care of children. On the other hand, men were described as strong, and the people who were expected to work and provide for their families. This historical view of the genders is still prevalent in today's society and can be seen affecting many decisions. However, many people are being educated on the topic and there are various movements dedicated to breaking these gender norms.

How is my own identity and my perception of others shaped by pre-existing gender norms?

Gender norms are, in my view, a set of requirements or rules set by society, that determine your worth or value in the community. As a female, I know that my gender is prone to more difficulties and unfairness, and it shapes my identity in a way that I have adapted, as many other women have. Along with this, I find myself being very conscious and aware in public, worried for my safety and my friends, in a society where women are often compromised or taken advantage of. However, I am grateful to be surrounded by people who care about me.

Children's nursery rhymes are extremely gendered and the nursery rhyme provided actively demonstrates that. For starters, her house is pink and she has many children, meaning she has spent most of her adult life having children. The last two lines mention her giving her children food and putting them to bed, which are tasks women are expected to do as they are seen as housekeepers or the caretakers of the family. Additionally, there isn't any mention in the text and illustration of the old woman having hobbies, meaning all she does is take care of the family like a machine, therefore objectifying her.

The song refers to an important day in the history of Turkey, called Children's Day. It states that kids have to wake up early, wear their "best" clothes, buy flowers, and not upset their mothers. Mothers, specifically. It then follows by saying their mother has been waiting for this day. Fathers aren't mentioned in the song, only mothers, and the song is dedicated to a day where children are to be celebrated. Confusing, but is very catchy song. One of my favorite tunes of all time.

nursery rhymes shouldn’t be gender to an extent because most nursery rhymes don't feature humans but animals or other mythical characters specifically speaking about the image. There is no difference between a girl or a boy ability to do something like they both can mange and deal with children. In my opinion they should make small differences like maybe the colour of the toys to just make a reference if the child is a boy or a girl

I never knew that and that is very generous of them at 1970s because during that time in Southern Asian countries, women were normally not allowed in the political office. When it is taken into consideration that it took around 80 years for the US to grant women the right to vote, I always ask "why?" Why did it take so long for a country to grant women the right to do something so simple as voting, when men have always had that privilege. Why are women considered inferior to men, why shouldn't they get the same rights as men when they are also humans?

How does your personal background and context affect how you analyze and react to these clips? How do you think someone from 1952 would react to the episode from I Love Lucy? Modern Family? What can you conclude?

As a younger female in the 21st century, it is easy for me to view this clip with years of progression and society and in a manner with which I can fairly assess the clips, using historical movements that have changed my personal viewpoint. If someone from 1952 watched a clip from I Love Lucy, I can imagine they would find the show "relatable" or normal: a show that comedically represents what every day looked like. However, if someone from that time watched Modern Family, it isn't outlandish to assume that they would have a visceral or surprised reaction to women having power. Perhaps some women of that time would watch the show and feel proud to see how far women came, but it's understandable to conspire that a majority would feel a sense of shock to see a significant change in women's roles and decisions.

How do these clips from TV shows from different time periods reinforce or challenge the patriarchal system? Explain your answer.

From these clips, it can be presumed that earlier shows tend to conform to societal norm and the patriarchy, while later and more recent shows challenge the patriarchy and bring up new ideas that conflict with said societal norms. But, to play the devil's advocate, these shows can be viewed in different lights so as to reflect varying takes on gender roles as a concept. The patriarchy suggests a society dominated by men. In the 1950's, having a female protagonist who voices the opinion of women in the country would've been seen as progressive at the time, when one acknowledges how time is relative and circumstantial. Similarly, having a modern female character say that she chose to settle down and quit her job after being pregnant, could be seen as something that feeds into the patriarchal views of women's role. However, the difference here is that this woman is choosing her fate, rather than having it societally imposed. In this sense, both shows dare to conform to and challenge the patriarchal system in their own ways.

This means I would react to these videos in an abnormal way as I feel like it should be the wife working. People from 1952 would feel very disgusted as these kinds of gender roles have been normalized for a while now. In I love lucy we can see that the wife is challenging the husband to see if he can manage being a house wife for a day. In modern family it’s the opposite the mother used to work until she became a housewife this makes the children confused as it’s usually the husband working.

1) I personally would agree to the modern family clip of what the husband spoke with his kids that women would work as well and they work on raising their family too. I would not be that surprise to the clip of the I love Lucy because someone of my family has already done that to my aunt. I have asked my great grand mother in India, that why do women become the housewife as they get married. She told me that she worked as well and then worked on raising the family but as she had 7 kids, she had to stay home. I think someone from that time would find that clip of I love Lucky familiar, as they might have done it to their wives at that time. I think people from that time with the mentality of 1952 would actually disagree with what the modern family clip had. As, before the men would be much more empowered then women in 1952, but if they changed their mentality with the current generation, actually they would not have a problem.
2) As we can see from the clip of I love Lucy that the wife is challenging the patriarchal system and saying that both genders would have equal rights. Meanwhile, in the modern family the husband agrees and explains that the patriarchal system is totally wrong. In terms of I love Lucky, I'm speaking about clip 3 where the wife fights with the husband to go outside. I have the same opinion that the patriarchal system should not exists and it is totally wrong to believe in.

That is also how marriages mostly happen till this date.

I think that someone from 1952 will think that the people in the show are delusional and they would not watch it, the same effect will happen if a person from modern times watched a video or ad from 1952 on this topic.

1) I think that because in 2022 women and girls have more freedom in certain areas of the world compared to the 1950's, someone currently analysing these clips would certainly react differently. During the 1950's, there was a lot of sexism and misogyny, which would make viewing these clips more normal and relatable, however when viewing it after women have gained so many rights in some areas, it is a little more unfamiliar to experience the same situations.

2) These clips from the TV shows from different periods reinforce or challenge the patriarchal system in different ways; in the show "I Love Lucy", the women want to be treated exactly like men, which challenges the patriarchy because men were supposed to be treated as the person in charge or 'the head in the relationship', and when Lucy disagrees with that, she challenges the patriarchy. Similarly, in Modern Family, the character Claire says that she used to work but decided to stay home and raise her kids which in a way both reinforces and challenges the patriarchy because she used to work, which is challenging it, but then stayed home to raise her kids, which reinforces the patriarchy.

So it affect our background by how we used to be treated or how women through what we see is treated and we actually grew up seeing most moms only working in kitchens to get a mentality of women working. He would agree with what the mean are saying as he thinks women cant do anything and this becomes a shock to him that men cant do what women do and they should be given a chance.

How does your personal background and context affect how you analyze and react to these clips?

I have experienced quite a few types of sexism, including benevolent sexism. Since age nine, I’ve become increasingly aware of sexism and my dislike towards the patriarchal system and ideologies has grown significantly as well. So when I watch the clip from I Love Lucy, I felt frustrated, but I also know that it isn’t entirely the men’s fault because their actions stem from the dichotomy in their head between what they think equality is and actual equality. And this dichotomy comes from the explicit and inexplicit gender stereotypes they’ve been exposed to their entire lives, which in turn affects them subconsciously.

How do you think someone from 1952 would react to the episode from I Love Lucy? Modern Family? What can you conclude?

Someone from 1952 would react very normally and would think nothing of the episode from I Love Lucy because back in 1952, society was still very much patriarchal, but feminism started to emerge a bit. On the other hand, they would probably be surprised when they watch the episode from modern family because the mother stated that she had worked before she decided to raise a family. Additionally, they would be surprised because the mother was actually wearing clothes that would be classified as ‘not feminine’. In conclusion, society has progressed slightly when it comes to women being treated as equals as women in the workforce is normalized. However, there is still a very long way to go to achieve complete equality.

How do these clips from TV shows from different time periods reinforce or challenge the patriarchal system? Explain your answer.

Both clips challenge and reinforce the patriarchal system. Lucy from I Love Lucy actually challenges the patriarchy in the clip as she asks for equality, however it is once again reinforced subconsciously when there is benevolent sexism coming from Ricky. In the Modern Family clip, the patriarchy is challenged when the mother reveals that she actually worked before she started raising a family because in a patriarchal system, women are supposed to be housewives while men are the providers of the family. When the dad says that the mom works for them, it reinforces the idea that women are housewives and their duties are cooking, cleaning, looking after the kids, etc.
