Cold sores are highly contagious. It is very easy to spread the virus from one person to another.

• The herpes virus travels to the lip or area that was originally infected via nerve endings.
• This area begins to tingle, itch or burn, just below the skins surface.
• About a day, or so, after the tingling a red bump will appear.
• This bump will turn into a blister.
• The blister will then dry up and a yellow crust will appear in it's place. The crust will fall off and leave a pinkish area in it's place.
• After these stages the virus will then travel back to the nerve cells, where it will go back to "sleep."

Cold sores normally last 7-10 days. Although there are no magic cures that will make the infection go away, there are special prescription medications and creams that will shorten the length of an outbreak and make the symptoms less painful. To make yourself more comfortable when you have a cold sore, you can apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel or anything cool to the area. You also can take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
