To what extent is Santa Clarita a Present-Day Levittown?

Santa Clarita is a present-day Levittown to a modern extent. It's truly amazing how one of the first suburbs in American history shares several similar traits to a modern-day suburb like Santa Clarita. Founded in 1987, Santa Clarita has grown immensely in the past thirty years, particularly in community areas like Stevenson Ranch and Westridge. However, while being modern, Santa Clarita and Levittown share the same kind of community activities, track houses, and the amount of trees in the area. Where the major differences are seen are in the layout of houses along with the types of people who live in Santa Clarita versus Levittown. Due to the two suburbs being equally similar yet opposite, Santa Clarita can only be considered a moderate modern-day Levittown.

1) A Perfect Planned Community

Before Levittown had come to existence, that area in Pennsylvania was merely just farm country that popularly produced spinach. However, Levitt and Sons saw the farmland as a place where they could establish the most "perfectly planned community" that consisted of doctors and dentists, shopping centers, baseball fields, a rail road station, swimming pools, and a town hall. Also, communities were broken up into subdivided neighborhoods, all bearing different names with a theme to the street names. Similarly, Santa Clarita was also established on previously land used for agriculture (onions), and includes the majority of amenities that Levittown had. It's interesting to see how society requires/likes the same types of activities that families enjoyed back in the 1950s, along with how neighborhoods and street name themes are still used. Santa Clarita to a large extent is a modern-day Levittown in terms of the "perfectly planned community" concept.

2) Identical Housing

One way that Santa Clarita is a modern day Levittown to a small extent is in the way that houses are structured. In Santa Clarita there are a variety of ways of living, including apartments, condos, a traditional homes. Housing can be split up into track homes and custom houses, where track houses may have the same layout as another house whereas custom are one of a kind. However, even track houses do come in a variety of different layouts; they don't just vary in color. Additionally, many homes in Santa Clarita are two-stories, a feature in housing that was not visible at all in Levittown. The historic suburb contained houses that all had the same layout, and only differed in exterior color as to avoid monotony. That is a very different trend that what can be seen in Santa Clarita today as some houses may look similar, but they can be easily identified. One aspect that both Levittown and Santa Clarita have in common, however, is that the houses typically had an open floor plan. Santa Clarita has continued the trend of "identical housing", but homes are not built to look exactly like the one next to it.

Levittown homes were very affordable (usually $10,000 plus closing fees) and were well received partially because what was included with purchasing a new home: kitchen equipment, a heating system, and built-in furniture. The way that Levitt was able to keep the cost down on the homes was by not including a garage or basement . Santa Clarita homes also do not typically have basements as they are not practical with the earthquake threat in California. They also have a built-in air conditioning/heating system, and kitchen appliances are usually included though many homeowners choose to install new or different ones. However, garages are characteristic to Santa Clarita houses, unlike Levittown, and built-in furniture isn't super common other than closets. With all these factors in mind, Santa Clarita is a modern-day Levittown to a moderate extent in regards to what is included in the purchase of a house.

An aspect of Levittown that was very common was the amount of trees planted around the area. Trees and plants were seen as a way to enhance deteriorating building and older properties and make them seem more valuable. In fact, trees were such a popular feature that one in every twenty-eight feet there was a tree planted, and each home averaged two and a half trees. Similarly, Santa Clarita plants trees and other plants for cosmetic purposes. In many neighborhoods across the city trees are seen lined up in uniform to accentuate the houses around them, along with many homes featuring trees as well. However, there has been a decrease in some areas due to the high temperatures that California gets to during many months in the year. Additionally, trees can be seen in newer and nicer neighborhoods rather than areas that are older or deteriorating. Santa Clarita somewhat a modern version of Levittown due to the

5) Segregated Suburbs

As we live in the modern-era, segregation isn't prominent in American suburbs, including Santa Clarita. Several different neighborhoods, like Stevenson Ranch, do feature a majority amount of white and asian people, but the community is very welcoming of all individuals and families of any type of race. The reason that some areas may have more of one race than another is simply due to choice of the individual or family or because a certain area may be more affordable. In short, Santa Clarita is not a town that promotes segregated sentiments. This is a sharp contrast from the demographics that were in Levittown. One of the reasons for the establishment of Levittown was to separate urban immigrants (majority being poor) from middle-class white families; the main race that existed in Levittown was Caucasian. Being that the majority of the population was white was not a coincidence, rather it was an intentional way to segregate the white middle-class from other races viewed at the time as "inferior".
