My father taught me to read and let me read two pages each night. I remember I stood in front of him and tried to read the words. He would stop me and he would read while pointing to the words and asked me to remember them. I am grateful that my parents introduced us to early literacy and made sure that we are ready for school. I am the oldest child, so my parents did not know anything about how to take care of a baby. At night, I was difficult and refused to go to sleep. Until my mom found a lullaby that puts me to sleep. Since then, they played lullabies when I nap and when I go to sleep at night. According to my mother, she tried putting me to sleep without playing the lullaby and I would scream and cry. When I turned 9 months, I learned to say “papaya” every time I see papaya trees in the backyard and the neighbor’s yard, no wonder I enjoy eating papaya so much. It was helpful that my parents sent us to the church preschool program on Sundays. Through this program, I learned to write my name, the Filipino alphabet, numbers and shapes to prepare for first grade.
