The first book I learned to read in English in first grade!

This is the first book that I learned to read in English. My father taught me to read and let me read two pages each night. I remember I stood in front of him and tried to read the words. He would stop me and he would read while pointing to the words and asked me to remember them. I am grateful that my parents introduced us to early literacy and made sure that we are ready for school. It may not be the same as how I exposed my children to early literacy but I enjoyed my experiences during my childhood.

I am the oldest child, so my parents did not know anything about how to take care of a baby. At night, I was difficult and refused to go to sleep. Until my mom found a lullaby that puts me to sleep. Since then, they played lullabies when I nap and when I go to sleep at night. According to my mother, she tried putting me to sleep without playing the lullaby and I would scream and cry. I can say that until today, listening to lullabies calms me down, especially after a busy day.

My first word was Papa. When I started eating table food at 7 months, my mother offered me papaya for breakfast. According to my mother, after a few bites of papaya, I made the sound “mmmm”. When I turned 9 months, I learned to say “papaya” every time I see papaya trees in the backyard and the neighbor’s yard, no wonder I enjoy eating papaya so much. Papaya fruit is one of the famous fruits that we can plant any time of the year.

I learned to say “papaya’ when I was 9 months. So, my mother introduced a song that has the word “papaya”. I sang and danced to this song and learned a few Tagalog words from the song. Some words that I learned were buko, (the heart of papaya), dala (taken away).

Pretend Play- I spent most of my day playing outside. My cousins and I loved to play “house”. I grew up poor so we play with rocks, leaves, wooden sticks, and fresh flowers most of the time. I made a necklace from the flowers I picked from the yard. My mother gave us a pot that she does not use for us to pretend to cook. My Aunt will bring us restaurant flyers and cookbooks to look at while we pretended to go to the store.

In the early 80s, kindergarten was not offered in a public schools in the Philippines, so all children started first grade right away. It was helpful that my parents sent us to the church preschool program on Sundays. Through this program, I learned to write my name, the Filipino alphabet, numbers and shapes to prepare for first grade.
