┊even with her booksmart side, miyeon was not given enough support to properly navigate the college scene in seoul early on, and she ended up dependent on her boyfriend junho to “guide” her as he seemed to know how everything worked. during many moments of their relationship, junho would insult miyeon and gaslight her whenever she would stand up for herself. undermining her intelligence and personality constantly, he instilled in her something that still echoes in her heart today.

“no one else is going to love you like i do. you’re both too smart and still so fucking stupid, other guys would be intimidated by you. or worse, take advantage of you and your innocence.”

┊junho had basically kept miyeon on an invisible, choking leash with his words and actions. miyeon even briefly thought she was going to marry him because no one else would want her. he had been cheating on her during this time, and miyeon still doesn’t know in present day.

┊with miyeon in her 3rd year of university and her boyfriend junho due for military enlistment in a few years, he tries to finally cross the boundary that he’d been trying to cross the second miyeon reached the age of sexual consent in south korea the year prior. junho had been hinting to miyeon that he’s wanted to have sex with her for months, and it finally escalated during a visit he made to her house after exam season.

┊“let go of me, junho. stop–“ she ends up slapping him, the taller boy tumbling backward after he tried pressuring her to sleep with him while her roommate was gone for the weekend. miyeon was adamant on not wanting to do it with him at the time, but he kept pushing her for it and she kicks him out after threatening to call her landlord for help. she dumps him as he was walking out the door and he slaps her, telling her that she will regret it, and storms off.

┊out of pure anger, he spreads a rumor that they broke up because he found out she was sleeping with a lot of other men. junho convinces his friends, all birds of the same feather mostly, to carry the rumour around, pretending to have slept with her. it escalates, with a lot of people in yonsei thinking miyeon was “a slut” for sleeping around. “no wonder she always gets good grades.” “she probably does it with the young professors too.” “if she was smart she shouldn’t have let him break up with her.”

┊the rumours are an attack on miyeon’s personality and she hated the image that her now-ex-boyfriend attached to her. she isolates herself almost completely, only hanging out with a few friends, some from seoul and some from gohyang who had come to visit. she only let in people she trusted.

┊it’s present day, miyeon had been working at the library and living away from her family home. she’s barely smiling, wears a mask most days, and doesn't like being touched or hugged even if she misses it herself. she is mean and snappy for her own personal safety and peace of mind. she only trusts a few people and keeps others at a distance because she thinks she will be taken advantage of again, by anyone new who would see the opportunity. she is still very close to her 17-year-old sister, who is now feeling the pressure miyeon felt years ago. her sisters minhee and minji visit her house on the regular for some time away from her parents. rang soohyuk and choi sora have loosened their grip on the two younger girls because they had seen what happened to miyeon and felt some guilt, but miyeon had emotionally cut them off and it was too late.

┊miyeon handles the gohyang public library seemingly with an iron fist, not hesitating to shush noisy visitors and anyone who inconveniences her or slows down her process, but she still deeply cares about people like she did before her time in seoul. the only difference being now she won't easily admit it. if someone was struggling to find a book, she would wordlessly slam said book on the table near the person. many of her kind deeds are never acknowledged, either because she had done it with the meanest expression or she did it anonymously. her expressions of love became tougher, but at the root of what she does it's still her old self.

the beeping tone of an ended call plays in miyeon's ears. her mother hung up.

┊her parents only let her come home after graduation, after they find out the rumours are messing with the rang reputation. miyeon returns to gohyang, a shell of what she was. she worked at the tv station briefly as an anchorwoman, a job she didn’t even want as she wanted to work behind-the-scenes in research. she quit soon after calling her creepy male boss in his late 20s a “nosy bitch dog” after he harrassed her a handful of times. it turns out he had knowledge of the rumours from seoul as well and had just assumed she'd be grateful he made her an anchorwoman when she applied for a research job off-camera. he was fired for sexual misconduct at the station much later on, but miyeon already quit and refused to come back. she had finally snapped and moved out of her family home that year too. she became the old librarian's assistant.

┊with her parents already breathing down her neck for as long as she could remember, miyeon regretted consenting to that early iq test. it wasn’t like the had a choice in the first place, but looking back, she wished she resisted or said no. she answered as she was told, and it was finalized by the results that her parent’s suspicions were correct: miyeon had very high iq, just a few points away from genius-level, noticeable even at age 7. after this, they aggressively drilled her into becoming the perfect daughter they could brag about. they enrolled her in violin lessons, voice lessons, and always urged her to keep her grades up. she was consistently a good student with extremely high grades. they already had plans for her to apply into any of the sky universities when she got older.

┊a sweet girl and a teenager that actually is quite obedient, but her rebellious streak comes out when her older sister miyeon is involved. is getting a similar treatment from the rang parents that miyeon did at her age, but it's milder since choi sora and rang soohyuk don't want another miyeon-type daughter who would snap and leave them. they're letting minhee pressure herself with their quite push instead of them overtly doing it. a victim to lots of academic-related manipulation, but is taken out of it when miyeon tells her like it is.

┊the youngest sister, someone miyeon and minhee dote on. she's still allowed a childhood since she's not as smart academically as her sisters and because she's 6 years old. enjoys drawing and playing with insects. easily influenced while also being stubborn and has the tendency to parrot her older sisters' words.

┊the pressure was settling in deeper into miyeon in high school, digging thorns into her psyche that her mental health was deteriorating just from keeping a high standard in her schoolwork. it was easy for her logical brain to do so, but her body and heart were near failure just from stress from trying to “make it look easy” to her classmates.

┊one night, she impulsively tried to run away from home, discreetly transferring some of her parents’ money into her personal wallet account and booking tickets to seoul so she could live there. she had even tried to take her 6-year-old younger sister minhee with her. she was almost successful and was immediately brought back home by the gohyang police department, sent out on call by her parents. she was swiftly punished, earning a painful slap from her mother and financial privileges held back by her father. they mentioned that the only way miyeon could gain back their favour was if she could get into a sky university, so she worked until her nose bled and her eyes stung, just to finally get into yonsei while applying in her last year and passing the national college entrance test with flying colors.

   ⤷ her favourite book genres are fantasy and science-fiction. she also enjoys some comic books with superheroes, anything fantastical and out of the world we live in. her favourite superhero is wonder woman.

   ⤷ even if her parents never allowed her to pursue food photography in art school for college, she carried her love for it by cooking by herself and posting pictures on a private instagram account, for close friends only. over time, her cooking skills also improved alongside plating.
