Salva is a boy that is running from his home that has just been taken over by war. Nya is a girl that has to walk 8 hours everyday to get water for her family. Linda Park wrote in A Long Walk to Water, "She could even drag it behind her, bumping it against the ground and raising a tiny cloud of dust with each step"(Park 1). This shows that Nya is positive. Salva is also positive because it says in the text, "There was only enough for each boy to have a few bites, but, oh, how delicious those bites were!"(Park 4). This means that even though Salva only got a few bites of the delisous meat, he did not complained and celebrated over the few bites. It is important to be positive in hard situations, because with a growth mindset, you can accomplish anything. Nya and Salva are also different because Nya is positive when she has to walk for eight hours everyday, but Salva is positive even when he has to run away from his home after to war over took his village. It says in the text, "Nya goes to the pond to fetch water for her family"(Park-back of book). This means that Nya has to walk a long ways all day, everyday just for her family. However, Salva has to run away from his war torn village. Linda Park wrote in A Long Walk to Water, "Go quickly, all of you' the teacher said...'Into the bush...Don't run home. They will be going into the villages. Stay away from the villages-run into the bush'"(Park 6). This means that Salva has to run away from his home and family into the unknown.
