During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the working class in America was made up of immigrants, women, children, and low-income Americans who worked long hours in dangerous factory jobs for low wages. These jobs were mostly found in growing industrial cities like New York, Chicago, and Pittsburgh. As industrialization expanded, the need for cheap labor grew. Many workers began to organize strikes and form labor unions to demand better conditions. These efforts helped lay the foundation for labor laws and workplace reforms that still exist today.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a new consumer culture emerged in America. Mass production, advertising, and department stores made goods more accessible and affordable to middle-class Americans. This cultural shift was especially visible in urban areas. As more Americans purchased brand-name products and used mail-order catalogs, the demand for higher wages and shorter workdays increased so that workers could also enjoy the new consumer lifestyle.

The Panic of 1873 was a major economic depression triggered by risky railroad investments and bank failures. It spread across the United States, especially affecting industrial cities and railroad towns. Unemployment surged, wages were cut, and many workers went on strike. The economic hardships revealed how vulnerable the working class was, increasing support for labor unions and demands for job protections.

Frederick Winslow Taylor introduced scientific management in the early 20th century as a method to increase productivity. It focused on breaking down tasks into small parts and timing workers to improve efficiency. This system was widely used in large factories but made work repetitive and stressful. Although it helped businesses lower costs, it also led to growing worker dissatisfaction, which fueled support for the labor movement.

The Knights of Labor, founded in 1869 by Uriah Stephens, was one of the first major national labor unions. It welcomed all workers, including women and African Americans, and pushed for reforms such as an 8-hour workday and the end of child labor. The union became especially influential in the 1880s. However, after the violent Haymarket Riot in 1886, public support declined. Despite its fall, the Knights of Labor helped pave the way for future unions.

The American Federation of Labor (AFL) was founded in 1886 by Samuel Gompers and focused on skilled white male workers. Unlike earlier unions, the AFL concentrated on practical goals like better wages, hours, and working conditions. Using collective bargaining and organized strikes, the AFL grew into the most powerful labor union of the era. It helped shape labor policy in the United States and demonstrated the effectiveness of organized labor.
