I am interested in this topic because I have always wondered why teachers assign so much homework. I have also, when doing large assignments, wondered if working these long hours even benefits me. I hope to learn about the impacts of homework on a student's life. However, more specifically, I would like to prove that too much homework can ruin a student's life. Stress is something that everyone suffers from, students especially. I hope that my data illustrates that students are too stressed and that something needs to be done. In order to get the best information, I will research the negative impacts of homework and look at studies done by professionals. I will then compare their research to a survey that I will send out asking students how much homework they do every night and if they are stressed. A combination of both sources will be enough for me to make a conclusion about the stress levels homework creates at Clinton.

They support this claim with copious amounts of data. The research included collecting data through a survey. Stanford received responses from 4,317 students at 10 high-performing high schools in California. This large population helps me verify that their data is accurate. Stanford further proves their theory by allowing students to fill in open-ended questions about their workload. The open-ended questions let the researchers know exactly how the students feel about the amount of homework they receive and it proves their point spectacularly. It was reported that 99 percent of students say that homework is their main source of stress. Stanford uses statistics to show you how real students feel and they support it by having a large population of students. 

Summary: The data that Stanford collected showed distinctively that homework has a negative impact on a student's life. Students average 3.1 hours of homework a night. In the open-ended questions, 99 percent of students said that pressure to get good grades, tests, and homework is their main source of anxiety. A majority of students say that homework-related anxiety often leads to sleep loss. Students also reported headaches, stomachaches, and even weight loss. Stanford’s clear representation of the data and chilling student response leads me, the reader, to the same conclusion that they stated.

When summarizing their data they give numerical values for the average amount of homework and percent of students who feel stressed but after those, nothing. They talk about how “many” of the students say that the amount of homework resulted in sleep deprivation however, they did not say how many. Stanford needs to specify the exact amount or else it leaves the reader skeptical of the percent of students who actually said that.

Summary: Stating the exact amount of students who responded about their stresses of homework is imperative in creating a successful argument using statistics. To prove that most students get too much homework, Stanford has to affirm that their statistics represent that. Also, the use of open-ended questions leaves a lot of room for the inflation of truth. Who is to say that the students who report high levels of stress are just over exaggerating and complaining because they want less homework. Stanford also leaves no link to the actual data in turn leaving the reader in total doubt of their claims.

This will help demonstrate how many students are stressed.

Recommendation: Cite your sources. Leaving citations or a link to the data would be helpful in ensuring that the reader trusts the article. 

Recommendation: Include graphs or other charts that help the reader visualize the data. The simpler way that data is presented, the easier it is to understand - which helps one get a point across.

In order to convince the reader the article must elaborate further rather than just saying “we are hurting them, both physically and emotionally.”

Recommendation: Although it is interesting that USD includes a paragraph at the end about how teachers can help with the workload, they should include more statistics before in order to keep the reader engaged and convinced until the last paragraph. For example, exactly how many students report feeling overwhelmed by homework.

Recommendation: The statistics that TPP provides are thorough and informative. However, They don’t take a position on the topic of whether homework is beneficial or not. They leave it to the reader to think about the data. This article would be strongest if the data is analyzed and formulated into a specific stance. 

Recommendation: The data is solely about the students' opinions. A higher-quality argument would include statistics from experts that support the students’ responses.
