In this week's lesson, we discuss different leadership styles.
Leadership Theories and Styles:

(A) THE GREAT MAN LEADERSHIP THEORY

The "great man" theory of leadership became popular during the 19th century. The mythology behind some of the world's most famous leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln, Julius Caesar, Mahatma Gandhi, and Alexander the Great, helped contribute to the notion that great leaders are born, not made.

(B) THE LEADERSHIP TRAIT THEORY

The trait theory of leadership focuses on identifying different personality traits and characteristics that are linked to successful leadership across a variety of situations. According to the researchers, the traits most commonly associated with great leadership include:

(C) LEADERSHIP BEHAVIORAL THEORY

The behavioural leadership theory focuses on how leaders behave and assumes that these traits can be copied by other leaders. Sometimes called the "style theory," it suggests that leaders aren't born successful, but can be created based on learnable behavior.

(D) THEORY OF TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP

Transactional leadership involves motivating and directing followers primarily through appealing to their own self-interest. The power of transactional leaders comes from their formal authority and responsibility in the organization.

We were asked to recall a recent VUCA situation at home or school you came across and how you dealt with it as a leader. What are your lessons for the future?
But what is VUCA? In simple words VUCA stands for volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. It describes the situation of constant, unpredictable change that is now the norm in certain industries and areas of the business world. VUCA demands that you avoid traditional, outdated approaches to management and leadership, and day-to-day working.

This week we discussed the VUCA situation.

And a framework for leadership action in the VUCA of the pandemic.

A few years ago, Bob Johansen, distinguished fellow at the Institute for the Future, developed an effective leadership framework as a "VUCA counterweight," which he called VUCA PRIME. VUCA PRIME (VP) encourages leaders to focus on developing vision, understanding, clarity, and agility as a means of coping with and overcoming the daunting and sometimes paralysing effects of the VUCA WORLD.

Volatility: Leaders should focus first on creating space for themselves and their teams to think. This could be as simple as reminding yourself and others to literally take a couple of steps back, take three deep breaths, and then ask, "What do we think we’re dealing with and what are the most important things we need to focus on in the short-run?" Creating space gives you the opportunity to calm yourself and focus your efforts.

Uncertainty: The second step in the action framework is to do what you can to reduce uncertainty by gathering data and insights. The data gathering is a focused effort on learning what you can from reliable sources. Insights can come from conversations with internal and external partners. In uncertain situations, insights can also come from examining past experiences.

Complexity: The third step in the framework is to identify discrete, manageable chunks of action that could make a positive difference. You’re not trying to solve 100 percent of problems on any given day; you’re trying to solve the five percent or so that will move you closer to bigger solutions. A series of successful 5% solutions usually works much better than deferring action in favour of fully baking a 100% solution.

Ambiguity: The fourth step in the framework is by running small tests and sharing what’s learned from them. In addition to improving the current state of reality, engaging people in a test-and-learn approach gives them reason to hope and keep going.
