Schools can increase the amount of test-taking time for ELLs when completing the English Language Arts test, Regents exams, or content-area assessments. However, teachers and principals should meet and plan ahead of time when providing this accommodation.

ELLs should be tested in the environment that is most conducive to them during a test. Tests can be given individually or in a small group and in a different setting than their classroom.

Third Reading of Listening Section of ELA Test

Adults proctoring the ELA test in grades 3-8 can read the listening passage three times to ELLs.

Bilingual Dictionaries and/or Glossaries

Bilingual dictionaries can be used by ELLs during state exams except during foreign langauge exams.

Also, for state examinations (not including ELA tests), students can take a test in their home language if it is one of the major langauges provided by NYS. If a written translation is not provided, students can have access to a translator.

Next Day Completion

If an ELL has two regents exams scheduled in one day, the student is entitled to take the second test the next day in order to reduce the hours and workload of MLs.
