My Philosophy on Teaching

For me, teaching is a lot more than just pushing curriculum on students. It's about the relationships that you can build with them. I don't remember any of the traditional lessons that my favorite teachers gave me, (except for the French Revolution with the guillotines) but I do remember the love, energy, and passion they had for teaching. I want to have that kind of impact on people every day. The only place that I have ever seen that happen is in a public school setting. I want to make someone's day just by cracking a joke or asking if someone needs some extra help with something, or just listening to someone who feels they can trust me enough to ask for advice. Kids will only learn if they want to, so if I can help the kids find a spark for what they want to do, they'll be excited to learn about it every day and make their life just that much better.

I went to a staff meeting during a late start on January 9th. I shadowed Mrs. Avery during it, and her group of teachers met in the library and just kind of talked. They even asked me about any questions that I had about teaching on the high school level which I found really helpful. Here are the notes that I took!

Don’t sleep during class, or just don’t snore

Welcome an active class, chatty can be good sometimes

Allow students to take initiative on things

Group discussions (large circles, seminars, etc.) promote a closer community with students. More involvement with questions

While some discussions don’t go the way you want, normally help the bond between teacher an student

Help individual students with studying, time management, etc.

YoU hAvE tO bE fIrM wItH tHe StUdEnT/tEaChEr DyNaMiC

Movies are popular with teachers

Bird box on Netflix is a dumb movie

Kim possible is trash.

DO NOT TALK ABOUT ABORTION

Relationship That I Made

I've made a lot of relationships through my placement, but the biggest one is probably the one that I've gained with Trevor. Trevor is a freshman, and I learned a lot about him especially because I started my placement right as the class was doing personal monologues which is a very personal thing for kids to be able to share. I always made sure to say hi to him, and celebrate when he would come to school after a long time away. I later learned that many of the times he didn't come to school was because he didn't have a ride, so I offered to drive him, but I haven't needed to yet. I think I kind of understand the whole "teacher-student" dynamic. I don't see him outside of class very often, so normally my interactions with him have been fairly professional, but I'm still a student myself, so it's hard to keep that separated. Anyways, it's going to be hard to say goodbye to all of them. I just hope for the best and wish them all luck.

Classroom Management

My classroom management was to try and implement technology into the classroom. Because of the nature of this class, technology is generally obsolete because of how much of the class is graded on performances. Alayna and I decided to make a Google Classroom to help remind the kids about assignments and have a place for them to post daily progress videos for scenes so Alayna and I could have a chance to help them improve. Unfortunately this didn't work out that well because of communication errors from our cooperating teacher to the students. There wasn't an emphasis placed on this, so most students didn't bother doing anything with it. Advice for next year: be vocal about expectations from the classroom management.
