Em sua origem, essa literatura explorava o medo e o susto por meio de monstros, fantasmas, entre outros, para causar espanto no leitor.

Havia um país em que tudo era proibido.

Ora, como a única coisa não proibida era o jogo de bilharda, os súditos se reuniam em certos campos que ficavam atrás da aldeia e ali, jogando bilharda, passavam os dias. E como as proibições tinham vindo paulatinamente, sempre por motivos justificados, não havia ninguém que pudesse reclamar ou que não soubesse se adaptar.

Passaram-se os anos. Um dia, os condestáveis viram que não havia mais razão para que tudo fosse proibido e enviaram mensageiros para avisar os súditos que podiam fazer o que quisessem. Os mensageiros foram àqueles lugares onde os súditos costumavam se reunir.

— Saibam — anunciaram — que nada mais é proibido. Eles continuaram a jogar bilharda.
— Entenderam? — os mensageiros insistiram.
— Vocês estão livres para fazer o que quiserem.
— Muito bem — responderam os súditos.
— Nós jogamos bilharda.

Os mensageiros se empenharam em recordar-lhes quantas ocupações belas e úteis havia, às quais eles tinham se dedicado no passado e poderiam agora novamente se dedicar. Mas eles não prestavam atenção e continuavam a jogar, uma batida atrás da outra, sem nem mesmo tomar fôlego.

Vendo que as tentativas eram inúteis, os mensageiros foram contar aos condestáveis.

— Nem uma, nem duas — disseram os condestáveis.
— Proibamos o jogo de bilharda.

Aí então o povo fez uma revolução e matou-os todos. Depois, sem perder tempo, voltou a jogar bilharda.

Italo Calvino (1923 — 1985) foi um notório escritor italiano, considerado uma das maiores vozes literárias do século XX. Sua trajetória também foi marcada pelo engajamento político e o combate das ideologias fascistas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial.

No conto que selecionamos, é possível identificar uma importante característica da literatura fantástica: a possibilidade de criar alegorias. Ou seja, apresentar um enredo aparentemente absurdo para criticar algo que está presente na nossa realidade.

Através de um país fictício, com regras arbitrárias, o autor encontra um modo de se pronunciar acerca do autoritarismo da época. Importa lembrar que a Itália viveu o fascismo "na pele", durante o regime de Mussolini, entre 1922 e 1943.

Neste local, a população foi tão reprimida que até seus desejos foram condicionados pelo poder vigente. Não conhecia outras atividades, por isso apenas queria continuar jogando bilharda, como sempre. Assim, o texto traz uma forte carga sociopolítica, refletindo acerca de um povo que não está acostumado à liberdade.

The Heartstopper series talk about sweets and lovely, but also dark and serious topics that revolves youth, topics like anxiety, eating disorders, homophobia and self-acceptance are discussed in Heartstopper.
