- In 1836 the tribe’s reservation was located on the Manistee River, in large part, to provide the Bands with a permanent home which gave them access to important hunting and trapping territories on the Manistee River system.
- On September 21, 1994 the federal government recognized the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians as a sovereign nation. Today, Little River Casino Resort continues to be one of the tribe’s primary sources of revenue to support the preservation of its culture and traditional practices.

- According to Richard Bremer in his book Indian Agent and Wilderness Scholar: "The Life of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians ceded about 16 million acres of Michigan for payments of money and payments on their behalf to traders. They were also given about 140,000 acres reservation land in the Lower Peninsula and they were allowed to hunt on the ceded land until it was settled."
- The original treaty was changed by the U.S. Senate before ratification. The Senate version only provided the tribes with reservation land for five years and added provisions to move the tribal members west beyond the Missouri River.
- 36 chiefs from the Grand River Band traveled to Washington, D.C., to sign the original treaty, but only 12-14 chiefs signed the Senate version. Some of the later signers were not the same chiefs who signed the first version.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Unless there are big public affairs or need for U.S government involvement in their tribe and laws, the U.S government does not get involved and leaves them to truly be their own working system/government.
