Stage 1: Trust Vs. Mistrust

This stage of development is critical to a child's perception of the world. If the caregiver of a child is gentle, loving, and sympathetic the child will gain confidence that the world and the people within it can be trusted. If the care given is of poor quality then a child may be withdrawn to protect themselves from further pain or disappointment. My parents were excellent caregivers. Their love and support helped me to develop confidence, and a basic trust of the world.

This stage begins in early Toddlerhood, when children are entering an era of selfhood. As the child begins to develop through this stage, parental units
that provide suitable guidance and reasonable choices, provide their children a way to conquer this stage of development. When I was a toddler, my parents were both warm and sensitive to my needs when developing independent skills.

Children develop a sense or morality and gain a better understanding of gender roles when going through this stage. Reasonable and patient parenting, along with positive play experiences with peers help guide children through this stage of development. My experience going through this stage of development was typical of many of my male peers of the time. I would often play occupational games with my friends, often working together to try out meaningful roles that I observed the adult males in my life doing. I witnessed my Father play many sporting activities and that influenced my interest in sports.

This stage takes effect in middle childhood and is resolved when positive experiences further a child's sense of competence when faced with difficult tasks using cognitive skills. When I was in grade school, I had an instructor who wasn't very supportive of my mathematical skills. I had trouble learning division. As a result, my teacher punished me by yelling hurtful things and was very unsupportive of me. I lived with the mindset that I was always going to be poor at math. I felt this way until recently when I decided to go back to school. I worked on my math skills nearly everyday. I came to the conclusion that I'm not poor at math at all, I just needed to develop some fundamental skills and had someone to support me in my desire to learn more about math. I don't feel nearly as anxious about math problems today!

This is the stage of development that I'm currently experiencing. In this stage of development people are understanding more about themselves. People can either form lasting intimate relationships or they cannot properly maintain relationships and end up in isolation. I've been able to maintain a healthy intimate relationship with my wife for over 12 years. We have had ups and downs along the way, but we resolve these issues through our patience with supportive and understanding communications.

In this stage, mature adults become satisfied, living happily, enjoying life and its offerings. When we can't reach this level of Generativity we stagnate and are unable to grow due to prior unresolved conflicts. I'm approaching this level of development shortly soon in my life. I believe that I will be able to grow and enjoy myself easily in the future. I am a very content soul.

This stage is often a stage of reflection. When we approach the ends of our lives we look back and dwell upon whether we've done well in life, or we haven't done so well in life. We either feel satisfied or we descend into despair and become irritable. I hope to feel content and satisfied in my twilight years. I believe I'll feel that way because I feel happy in this moment of life.

When a young person's prior conflicts are resolved in a negative way, it may lead to a directionless future for them. This young person may also feel like society is out of touch with what the young person has to offer. I remember going through this stage when I was a teenager. I believed that my appearance and my social group that I spent time with was my identity. I would argue that this stage of development is ongoing throughout life as I have had the experience of gaining, losing, then regaining my identity.
