Lea Valley is situated on the North Eastern side of London’s boundaries with neighbouring Essex. The area itself consists of several different waterways and has been recently modernised to include a few reservoirs that provide the city of London, under management of Thames water, a sustainable water supply.

Geographically the area was subject to glacial erosion at the end of the last glacial period, these processes have lead to the Lea area becoming a very valued piece of land. The northern sections of the valley have been exploited for sand, gravel and brickearth. These areas have been now placed under protection as the Lea valley area became a national park on the 9th of October 2000.

Due to its several main waterways, that lead from the borders of Essex into central London, the Lea was used as a significant route of transport for light goods. This contributed to an increased development in the area as many of the waterways had become major canal routes. The waterways also produced a heavy flow rate as the route the water took originated in high land, this meant an increased number of water powered industries arrived to make use of this feature. Many power stations have cropped up as well as several mills and food production units that all utilise this valued flow.

Today the Lea valley and surrounding waterways are used for more industrial purposes than its former past. In particular the production of several reservoirs that supply London. Alongside the historical use of the Lea, the area itself was made a national park in 2000 this caused for many of the canal ways to become ribbon regenerated and introduced as a tourist attraction.

Famously the Lea area is now recognised and well founded for its part played in the 2012 London Olympics. The Lea underwent a series of recent further regeneration that has developed the area from poor industrial decline into a vibrant green space just out of city central London.
