Robert Frost-Acquainted With the Night.

I have been one acquainted with the night. I have walked out in rain—and back in rain. I have outwalked the furthest city light. I have looked down the saddest city lane. I have passed by the <s>watchman</s> on his beat And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet When far away an interrupted cry Came over houses from another street, But not to call me back or say good-by; And further still at an<s> unearthly</s> height, One luminary clock against the sky <s>Proclaimed</s> the time was neither wrong nor right. I have been one acquainted with the night.

As I read this poem, I feel a bit sad. I imagine the character as a man with a trench coat and a black fedora-like hat. The city is tragic, dark, and dim. He is the only one walking in the town besides the watchman. He is alone with just himself and his thoughts. The rain is pouring down on him. Not only that, but He hears a cry a bit away from him, but he doesn't think anything of it and continues his lonesome walk in the rain.

Memories:

I guess the three memories that come to mind when I read this poem are the first memories: when I was very depressed back in 2017. I would be like the character; whenever it rained, I would walk alone to pass the time. The very first line, "I have been acquainted with the night." instantly makes me think of myself and how much I am a night owl. I know it's not healthy, but I stay up all night because it is peaceful, and I can be myself, I guess, like nothing is expected of me during the night. This poem seems to be about loneliness. So, I think the final memory I had while reading this poem is before I met my partner, I was very lonely and didn't really go out much, which kind of helps me relate to the character in a way.

The Speaker:

I would say the speaker could be a man. He is talking about wrestling his thoughts and feelings involving loneliness. This speaker might have some education due to the writing style/vocabulary. The speaker's emotions are sad and depressed, as the speaker mentioned walking in the rain at night. The character's social background can be seen as someone who isn't wealthy or unemployed.

Values:

I think this poem's value is possibly about spreading mental health awareness. I think I say this because the poem explores isolation, loneliness, and despair. This poem made me think about my own experiences with those feelings and, in a way, made me look back at how far I've come. I was once like the character walking in the rain, sad and lonely, But now I've changed, and I'm not that kind of person anymore if that makes sense. To me, this poem really sheds light on just how everyone, no matter who you are, can have these kinds of feelings.
