Rickshaw coolies, plantation workers and tin miners took this drug as it was common for them to take if after working under the heat all day, they needed something to refresh them.

From the sources, I could tell that the prisoners were overpowering the prison guards and Superintendent and that they were even escaping over the walls in all directions.

Pickering also licensed agents and boarded incoming ships to make sure the coolies do not get mistreated. This leads to my next point where coolies are mistreated, when they are mistreated they would want to smoke opium to help then relive stress. This will eventually make them addicts. Lim Bo Keng, a medical doctor, founded the Anti-Opium Society in 1906, he also punished the colonial government to do away with opium. And eventually he banned opium.
