As we know Waverly's mother is really judgemental and thinks she right most of the time. Not only is she judgmental towards her daughter but to others as well. When they were at the restaurant her mother judged the way Waverly's hair looked. She also criticized the food.

Waverly is in a relationship with Rich. With Waverly's mom being so critical we couldn't expect anything but criticism when it came to Rich. Waverly was scared for Rich because of her mother but she really loved Rich and he loved her. She was just afraid her mother criticism would make her look at Rich differently like her ex husband Marvin

Waverly had dinner at her parents and brought Rich with her. Obviously her mother was criticizing Rich already. At the dinner table Rich didn't do things so traditionally. He even criticized Waverly's mom cooking.
