"What's the matter with your hair?" she said in Chinese. "What do you mean, 'What's the matter,' " I said. "I had it cut." Mr. Rory had styled my hair differently this time, an asymmetrical blunt-line fringe that was shorter on the left side. It was fashionable, yet not radically so. "Looks chopped off," she said. "You must ask for your money back:

As we know Waverly's mother is really judgemental and thinks she right most of the time. Not only is she judgmental towards her daughter but to others as well. When they were at the restaurant her mother judged the way Waverly's hair looked. She also criticized the food.

"my ability to play chess was a gift. It was effortless, so easy. I could see things on the chessboard that other people could not. I could create barriers to protect myself that were invisible to my opponents... They don't know which way to run." I hated the way she tried to take all the credit."

Waverly was really good at chess when she 10.She knew what all her opponents would do.Her mom would love to show her. The only thing wrong was that her mother would love to take the credit.

"But I worried for Rich. Because I knew my feelings for him were vulnerable to being felled by my mother's suspicions, passing remarks, and innuendos. And I was afraid of what I would then lose, because Rich Schields adored me in the same way I adored Shoshana. His love was unequivocal. Nothing could change it"

Waverly is in a relationship with Rich. With Waverly's mom being so critical we couldn't expect anything but criticism when it came to Rich. Waverly was scared for Rich because of her mother but she really loved Rich and he loved her. She was just afraid her mother criticism would make her look at Rich differently like her ex husband Marvin

" I couldn't save Rich in the kitchen. And I couldn't save him later at the dinner table.... "But the worst was when Rich criticized my mother's cooking, and he didn't even know what he had done. As is the Chinese cook's custom, my mother always made disparaging remarks about her own cooking."

Waverly had dinner at her parents and brought Rich with her. Obviously her mother was criticizing Rich already. At the dinner table Rich didn't do things so traditionally. He even criticized Waverly's mom cooking.

"You must go in October. That is the best time. Not too hot, not too cold. I am
thinking of going back then too," she says authoritatively. And then she hastily adds "Of course not with you!"

Lastly I think Waverly's mother really ended up Rich. She even had an impact on their wedding. Deep down I think she wanted to go to China with them.
