Throughout 74 years after the siege of Leningrad we, citizens of Saint-Petersburg, still remember that day, terrible and solemn. It commemorates the grief about the death of millions of people and happines about living in a world without fashism. The date of January 27, 1944 became significant for the course of World War II. The most important thing then was the rescue of people from catastrophic devastation and hunger. Sometimes it's hard to talk about terrible events in the history of mankind, but we must talk about them.
872 days showed the greatness of the man - the strenght of spirit. In our opinion, everyone's heart can be touched by veterans' recollections of that time. Here we want to present their memories of the difficulty of living in the days of extreme hunger in a military setting.

It was the most difficult thing - to explain the historical disaster to children. They wanted to eat very much, and at that time their loved ones were dying in front of them. How did the childhood of the unfortunate children pass? In their 5-10 years they had no toys, no clothes, not even food and warm shelter. Then Ivan Narkevich added a drop of joy into the sea of children's grief. He dropped his food to dogs to entertain children - everyone knows that even a little bit of happiness could give a huge amount of strength. But only the most courageous ones tried to help the children. Joy in those days was priceless. Ivan Narkevich should be known as a man with a capital M, and memory of him should not fade away!

There was dark and scary, children and even many adults were crying from fear and loss. After that we were staying at home. My most terrible childhood memories are howling sirens, and the knocking of a metronome, feeling of hunger for the reason I do not remember, and the habit of chewing constantly. In a forest, in a field I could chew grass blades or leaves - everything seemed very tasty".
