Many girls drop out of school when they are married young, losing their right to education and life skills.  Women in Yemen have been fighting hard to ban child marriage, and they have the support of the parliament and the president. But, the country isn’t stable enough to upset the religious leaders, who believe banning child marriage would clash with Islamic/Shariah law. Girls as young as eight are married off, and 52% of girls under the age of 18. Although the law is not passed yet, it proposes that parents who marry off their daughters before the age of 18 could face a hefty fine and the possibility of one year in jail.
