IN his album Drake can be noted using several phrases drawn from Caribbean dialect which is apparently appealing to the North American markets. This has gained a reputation for the Caribbean people based on how we speak as our main identifying trait rather than any other aspect of Caribbean culture. What is alarming is that this notion was put forward by someone who has very little association with or knowledge about the Caribbean and its culture where as in the past this would have been done through a Caribbean based icon such as Bob Marley. Despite being far from where the initial Spanish conquerors would have landed on the country it became a plantation area. Through some flurry of events the area became one of the most diverse and highly populated areas in the country, housing persons from several ethnic backgrounds and even from both extreme ends of the socioeconomic scale. It caused me to review certain concepts which were basically assumed to be true about the Caribbean such as Caribs and Arawaks. It taught me to question everything. Also learning about the different ways in which we identify as a Caribbean people has caused me to think about how I as a Caribbean person am seen by the world and how i can represent my country and region to present a positive image of our people. The course overall has changed the way in which i view and interact with my society with me now having a greater appreciation for our diversity and an appreciation for the events which lead to the present day. Though the issue is not within the region it has major implications for the region. Caribbean countries are mostly monocrop countries with open markets where by they depend on Exports for income and imports for consumption. A war would close most oppertunities for international trade and force these countries to operate around closed markets.
