Although the natural state of humans is dissatisfaction, to achieve happiness, humans must want differently because finding meaning brings satisfaction and enjoyment which leads to happiness.

The human body thrives the most when it receives positive emotions, and when it doesn't, it craves them. Homeostasis is meant to keep the body satisfied and places value on "money, power, [and] prestige" (Brooks 6) because it satisfies most people.

Homeostasis is used to "maintain stable conditions as best they can" (Brooks 6). This indicates that the mechanism is continually striving to maintain a balance between the mind and body's well-being.

One of Brooks' main arguments is that "Satisfaction = getting what you want" (Brooks 5). If we change what, why, and how we want, it may lead to an easier time finding the satisfaction we crave.

"A 'rich' caveman had a few extra animal skins and arrowheads" (Brooks 8). Having the extra items shows that the person was powerful and has the drive to go and receive the materials. It is simply human nature that we compare what we have to others, but if we take a step back to look at what we have, then it is harder to compare. This will eventually lead to satisfaction because there is no standard we are trying to reach or impress.

"Dopamine is excreted in response to thoughts about buying new things, winning money, acquiring more power or fame, having new sexual partners" (Brooks 10). This shows that a lot of our happiness derives from materialistic items or ideas. It surprises me that he does not mention anything about family, friends, or loved ones.

Brooks is directly referring to dissatisfaction and how materials cannot satisfy, but they can help lead to satisfaction. Just like the quote, "money cannot buy happiness."
