What kind of teacher would you like to be?

I want to become a teacher who understands how meaningful a teacher-student relationship can be. The teacher-student relationship is not restricted only to cognitive aspects but also to several other factors. The teacher-student and student-student relationships are significant and positive when mutual recognition, respect, and affection exist. I want to be a teacher who always keeps that in mind, despite all the difficulties of teaching. Furthermore, I want to be a teacher who has an active commitment to the self-actualization process (Teachers must be critical, always review their work and continually seek a better foundation for what they do) and that I manage to promote my well-being and well-being of students

Ethnography/action-research article

“Ser/Estar professor de inglês no cenário da escola pública: em busca de um contexto eficaz de ensino/aprendizagem”, by Maria Inês Pagliarini Cox e Ana Antônia de Assis-Peterson da UFMT, (2002).

This article attempts to draw some data about the profile of the teacher of English in Brazilian public schools. Eleven teachers were interviewed. They revealed that there is a shortage of “real teachers” in the state of Mato Grosso. Most teachers are what they call “pseudo-teachers”. These are teachers who do not have a degree in English, know very little of English, and teach English to fill in their required time schedule. They believe students do not learn English at public schools and point out several reasons for that such as large classes, meager resources, no time available to allocate time to study, low salary, and mismatch between theory and practice. This situation reflects and reinforces the devalued status of the English language among other disciplines in the curriculum of public schools.

I chose this article to understand more about how ethnographic research works.

We all already had a general conception of ethnographic research. However, we learned a lot of new information. For example, we didn't know the specificities of the instruments in this type of research, like interviews, questionnaires, recordings etc. In the case of interviews, we are getting knowledge that has a lot of types of interviews for different proposals. In summary, we are understanding that have more possibilities that we have already known when we talk about ethnographic research.

Station #4: Ethnographic Research

We will reflect and do ethnographic research on a public school environment. We're going to reflect on foreing language learning for the first time in school and we're also going to reflect on the usage of technology in classes.

Instruments: Interviews and Questionnaire.

Interview (for teachers):

- First, how is the feeling to start a new moment in the students' life and introduce the English language?
- What are the difficulties have you found during the sixth grade?
- What are the most exciting activities the kids like to work with?
- Do you use traditional methods or innovative methods? What's the difference between your class compared to the other teachers?

Questionnaire (for students)

1- Are you excited to start studying English at school?

2- What do you already know about the English language?

3- How do you think you can use technology to study English?

4- What is the importance of the English language in your life?

Observing an English class in a public school context was a different experience since in this context I always had the student's perspective. Understanding the classroom dynamic with a critical view and with what I've been studying at UFU is very important for me as a future teacher. It was very enriching getting to discuss the classes observed with my group.

I think I learned a lot from all our discussions on this subject. PROINTER II is very important and I really enjoyed our dynamics. I will definitely keep learning and reflecting on everything we studied this semester. Every discipline is a new challenge and an opportunity for learning.
