Sumerian times is brought back to 4500BC-1900BC. Both men and women wore long and short skirts. It was made out of a fleece like fabric know as kaunakes. The women were the producers of the textiles, they spun the wool and wove the cloth, while the men dyed the finished cloth. Servants, slaves, and soldiers wore short skirts, while royalty and deities wore long skirts. They wrapped around the body and tied with a belt and the waist to hold the skirt up.

The Middle Ages took place around 1400-1500. In these times, clothing was a symbol of class and of wealth. The poor peasants of the time would be wearing torn clothing with dull colors, and those at the top of the class pyramid would be wearing newly made and sewed dresses with bright colors. In these times, many dyes were exclusive to those with massive amounts of wealth, so seeing certain colors was seen as a stature of wealth and royalty. In fact, in some places there were laws forbidding those seen as poor to purchase certain types of fabrics, such as velvet. Head dresses were also something only the wealthy were allowed to have.

The Tudor women of the 16th century wore many layers. The first being a chemise, a kind of under dress. Corsets were very common. Most gowns were long and laced in the front and back. Placards and stomachers were worn with these gowns sometimes to cover the lacing. These were mainly for richer women. Sleeves were often long and puffy. For Tudor men padding was used to exaggerate. Waistlines were mainly v shaped. Doublets were a stuff garment that was laced or sewn into place. Hose were often worn. Bright colors were common among men and women of high status.

The beginning 1960’s continued with the fashion trends of the 50’s, skirt suits, dresses, and in general formal wear. Womens fashionwear was also heavily influenced by the first lady of the time (early 60’s) Jaqueline Kennedy, who wore many dresses and skirt suits that were matching in color. Later in the decade, the fashion became more colorful and playful, from influences of London fashion. “Swinging London”, a trend that was focused on youthfulness and brought us things like The Beatles and miniskirts. Mary Quant was an influential designer of the time, and her shop Bazaar sold simple and colorful designs that were very popular with teens and differed from the previous styles that were more “stiff”. There was a lot of innovation and experimentation happening in fashion because of new materials such as acrylics and polyesters. The late 60’s were influenced by the upcoming “hippie” aesthetic.

The style of clothing during the 1940s was simple because of lack of resources. (Due to ww2) fabrics that were popular we’re tweed, and plaids. The designs were simple but dignified, women started wearing more pants but it was still relatively “new” their dresses were more straight in outlines. They did how ever pinch at the waist just not as much as the 50s. Katherine Hepburn was a popular actress who often wore suits and was a fashion icon during that time. Men’s style stayed relatively the same as the 30s during the fist part of the decade. But later there was a style called the zoot suit that was high waisted, wide shoulders and pant legs. But still it wasn’t anything revolutionary and died out relatively quickly. Cotten, knitted, we’re popular fabrics for kids. With the lack of resources during the war hand made clothing was popular. Boys would wear shorts just above the knee and girls would have dresses also just above the knees. Overall style didn’t evolve much because because of lack of resources but they did start to drift more conservative and more classic to emulate the classic American vibe.

The 1990’s was very much the awkward middle sibling of the 80’s and 2000’s. While the 80’s is often portrayed as colorful and stylish by today’s standards, the actual 80’s had a lot of brown and neutral colors, with clothing shapes that today we may find clunky and ugly. The 1990’s was trying to transition into a slimmer figure, a more modern style. People were still learning to wear these styles though, and a lot of it was experimental. You could see a lot of denim on denim as well as hoop earrings and brimmed hats. Big fashion influencers of the time were Chanel, Prada, Versace and Gucci, many of the same brands we get inspiration from today. The 90’s had a similar fashion throughout, as social media wasn’t a huge thing yet and micro trends were a thing for the future.

The 2000s were characterized by the turn of the millennium, rapid increase in technology, and the aftermath of 9/11. The excitement of new technology like smartphones and the internet inspired metallic, sleek looks. After the 9/11 events fashion rotated towards conservatism. Like items such as jeans. Which were simultaneously fashionable and casual, perfect for every occasion. These jeans were low-rise, flared and by around 2006, skinny and distressed

Companies like True Religion and 7 for all Mankind dominated the market. The beginning of the decade experienced a rise in bohemian (boho) looks, this combated the grunge look of the 90s. The 2000s was the beginning of celebrities having quick influence over the mainstream fashion world. And consequently the rise of fast-fashion. Affordable (not sustainable) clothes were a huge hit. Designers like Karl Lagerfeld aided this through H&M. Also fast fashion grew because of the new online retail market. The most notable fashion icon of the 2000s is model and reality TV star, Paris Hilton. Part of what helped her achieve this title is the use of the paparazzi. Men’s wear was aimed to be “dominant” looking. This included trench coats, cargo pants, polo shirts with a popped collar, and rugby shirts. The 2000s was a revolutionary decade for fashion.

Paul Poiret helping introduce orientalism and contributing at-that-time modern french couture to the fashion industry influenced soft silhouettes with vibrant colors and draped fabrics. It was most common to see a large skirt with a tiny waist, but a fashion rule for that era was small waisted clothing. another popular outfit was a wrap-over dress made by Claire McCardell.
Now men's fashion in the 50's went in a more informal direction. most of the men's clothing for this era was inspired by Hollywood actors such as Marion Brando and James Dean. Men wore shirts, coats, waistcoats and breeches and women usually wore petticoats, shifts, jackets and dresses.
