I have attached an article that has a PBL lesson plan. I wanted to find something a little different because much of art class can be easily made into PBL lessons so I went after art history and was sort of surprised to find a lesson plan that worked so well for that, Other than this many art projects are very close to or already are set up as PBL lessons. Essentially you could propose something like "We will be making human heads out of clay, what tools do you need? What kind of reference is best? What techniques work well for your style?" all of these questions will have to be explored by the students as they work through the project and experiment with different tools, techniques and references.

Students will be separated into groups each one researching a classic sculpture technique (stone carving, clay modeling, bronze casting) and learn about the basic steps each one requires as well as finding at least one famous artist that used their technique. After coming back together the groups will teach each other about the topic they researched.

This article has some great ideas for service learning in the arts, I especially love the idea of research on how art education can and will positively impact others. I think that would be a great first step in service learning to than lead on to other ideas and bigger ideas like painting a community mural.

I think I have mentioned this before but I would love to incorporate Minecraft into a sculpture class. People have made some amazing things in Minecraft and I would love to use it for that as well as just for students to get more used to thinking in 3 dimensions in a more forgiving environment before jumping into a big clay sculpture project.

This article has a bunch of simple ideas that could easily be incorporated into an art class. Generally a lot of art class is about discovering the answer to questions for yourself because many questions posed in an art class have no concrete answer, you must find your personal solution to the problem. To be more specific, you could ask student (as the article sugggests) to ponder what sort of emotions different color schemes might cause and have them discover through looking at just color swatches as well as full paintings that incorporate the color scheme.
