Lemons, which are native to Asia- specifically China, India, and Myanmar, were brought to Egypt around 700 A.D. Many drinks were made with lemon juice to quench the people’s thirst in the Egyptian heat. Lemon wine sweetened with honey was one of these drinks. Another drink was called qatarmizat, a lemon juice sweetened with sugar- the first lemonade.

The first records of lemonade in Europe are in France, but it is unknown how it got there. In 1676 a Parisian soda company, Compagnie de Limonadiers, had a monopoly on lemonade production, selling the drink on the streets of Paris. Lemonade grew in popularity, spreading around Europe and eventually the world. The first carbonated version of lemonade was introduced in 1833. It’s tart and crisp taste took the world by storm!

After being sold only on streets, lemonade began to make its way to restaurants, bars, and pubs. It spread around the globe rapidly. After several years of squeezing lemons by hand and adding your own sugar, convenience took control by making a powder mix. Eventually it began to be mass produced in cartons and bottles, ready for consumption. Soon everyone was sipping on lemonade.

Based on how lemonade has developed through the years, who knows what it has in store. Lemonade hasn’t really changed much in the past few decades, but I’m sure there might be concerns about its sugar content, new flavors, and changes in manufacturing. I really think lemonade is a drink that will stay a staple in millions of homes, especially America. I also think lemonade stands will become more infrequent sadly. As generations grow up I feel as if they are losing important values like hard work which can be earned from running a lemonade stand. Although such a small thing, I think lemonade has a big future ahead of it.
