A responsible use for Federal Funding?

The federal government showed great responsibility in funding the TVA because it created jobs during the Great Depression and provided more affordable energy to the people of the Greater Tennessee Valley.

However, the TVA may no longer be a responsible program. As of May 2014 the TVA owed the federal government more than $27 billion. It's average rate for kilowatt hours for energy has risen 77% making it the most expensive energy of all the surrounding states. In addition, the interest on the $27 billion is causing the TVA debt to climb rapidly.

People thought as they do with all government funded programs the cost would be to great. In this case the TVA started off strong but it now appears the people were right. The TVA's debt to the federal government is so sever that they may never be able to pay it off.

With the country reeling from the Great Depression, President Roosevelt created the TVA as part of his “New Deal”. In the begging the TVA provided jobs and affordable power to the Greater Tennessee region through the end of World War II.

Through the 50's, 60's and 70's the TVA remained relevant because they served as the nation’s largest electricity supplier. The TVA accommodated unprecedented economic growth and kept wholesale electric power affordable and reliable while unveiling a new clean-air strategy.

In the 21st century the TVA continues to make life better through our work in energy, the environment and economic development.
