ECO 252-OL01G Global Activity #4
Be sure to practice proper spelling, grammar, sentence structure, etc... You must respond to at least one classmate. Responses should be 4-5 sentences in length - minimum. "Great job" and "Interesting" are not acceptable responses. Students will earn a 0 for work that lacks true reflection. If you do not have a Padlet account, be sure to put the name of the student you are responding to at the beginning of your post and your name at the end of the post. I will not give credit after the due date for posts without this information.

Maelyn McIntyre

Professor Hyatt

2021FA-ECO-252-OL01G

December 2,2021

Upon reading all of the articles regarding direct foreign investments within the United States, and direct foreign investments the United States had in other countries, I found all of the information to be very intriguing. It was extremely eye opening to see the big picture on such a large scale.

There is an article on in Business Texas news about the Texas Economic Development Corporation that states “Foreign investors continued to be interested in acquiring, starting, and expanding business in the United States despite the COVID-19 pandemic, and Texas led the nation in FDI in 2020, according to a July 1st report by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.” This in itself is not surprising. However, it goes on to state that Texas had received the largest investment, with expenditures over $18.6 billion dollars. Texas also had the largest employment by foreign-owned businesses. Per the article, based on the GDP growth in 2019, Texas would be the ninth largest economy in the world if it were a country. How shocking is that! The largest investing country was Germany followed by Canada, according to the BEA report.

An article in August 2021, Foreign Direct Investment: A new strategy for the United States, informs that European firms account for almost two-thirds of total foreign direct investment stock in the United States. Japan and Canada follow close behind. This article is packed full of recent, relevant information regarding incoming and outgoing DFI details.

According to an article by Sarah Hansen on Forbes, U.S. companies are spending millions to increase production overseas. Pepsi spend over $700 million to buy a Chinese snack brand, Tesla is ramping up production in China, and Goldman Sachs took full ownership of its Chinese joint venture partner. Since China has remained resilient throughout the pandemic, more U.S. firms will continue to invest in China for future growth potential. According to Hansen’s article, China reeled in over $163 billion dollars in new investment from foreign businesses in 2020.

Based on data provided by Statista Research Department, foreign direct investments from the United States to other countries in 2020 was about $6.15 trillion dollars. Astounding. According to Statista, the countries that received the largest amount of FDI from the United States in 2019 were the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Luxemburg.

Works Cited

Department, Statista Research. https://www.statista.com/statistics/188571/united-states-direct-investments-abroad-since-2000/. 4 August 2021. 2 December 2021.

Hansen, Sarah. https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarahhansen/2021/01/24/china-passes-us-as-no-1-destination-for-foreign-investment-as-coronavirus-upends-global-economy/?sh=30dca1c81252. 24 1 2021. 2 December 2021.

https://businessintexas.com/news/texas-led-nation-in-foreign-direct-investment-employment-in-2020/. 1 July 2021. 2 December 2021.

Mohseni-Cheraghlou, Amin. https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/foreign-direct-investment-a-new-strategy-for-the-united-states/. 5 August 2021. 2 December 2021.
