Esperanza stood on one side and Miguel stood on the other and the river could never be crossed” (Munoz-Ryan 17). 
 This shows that Esperanza did not think about how her comments made Miguel feel. She told him this because she feels that he is not worthy of her. In fact, this interaction shows that Miguel is not even worthy of Esperanza being sensitive to his feelings. She says something that is clearly hurtful and doesn’t think about how it affects him.

This also proves he is power hungry because when he offered Ramona a proposal  he mentioned being a very powerful couple because of her beauty. He is also power hungry because he knew that if he got her to be his wife every body would vote for him because she Is well respected.

But Luis insisted to marry Ramona with no thought about how she would feel.
