This project was very interesting and I learned a lot about down syndrome overall. The most common form of Down syndrome is known as trisomy 21, a condition where individuals have 47 chromosomes in each cell instead of 46. Trisomy 21 is caused by an error in cell division called nondisjunction, which leaves a sperm or egg cell with an extra copy of chromosome 21 before or at conception. Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition. There are more than 400,000 people living with Down syndrome in the U.S. In order to find out if your baby has down syndrome, your doctor may suggest that you have tests during pregnancy to find out if your baby has down syndrome. An ultrasound can detect fluid at the back of a fetus's neck, which sometimes indicates down syndrome. Down Syndrome cannot be cured. However, early treatment can help many people with down syndrome to live productive lives well into adulthood. Children with down syndrome can often benefit from speech therapy, occupational therapy, and exercises to help improve their motor skills. Most people with Down Syndrome have mild or moderate mental retardation. Some of the common physical signs of Down Syndrome include: A flat face with an upward slant to the eye, a short neck, and abnormally shaped ears. A deep crease in the palm of the hand. One thing I found really important that parents should remember when they find out their child has down syndrome is your baby is a baby first. You are not giving birth to a "Down syndrome" baby. You are giving birth to your baby, a unique individual who will bear resemblance to you and your family in addition to some similar features to others with Down syndrome. Some parents will get very anxious and uneasy when they find this out, and that is normal but it is important to accept your child instead of being disapointed. I really enjoyed learning about down syndrome in children and i think this show help parents very much!
