Riverton has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of processed foods. Led by dietitian Rachel Lang and supported by local schools and businesses, the initiative aims to help residents make healthier food choices.

The campaign was created after a study revealed that 60% of Riverton residents rely heavily on processed foods, contributing to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. It encourages locals to reduce processed foods—often high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats—and to choose fresh, whole foods instead.

“We’re not asking people to give up convenience, just to be mindful of what’s in their food,” said Lang. Local chef Marcus Tran, a campaign supporter, added, “Cooking with fresh ingredients can be simple, affordable, and more satisfying.” Nutritionist Sarah Gomez also noted, “Small changes, like swapping snacks for whole foods, can make a big difference.”

The campaign offers free nutrition workshops, cooking classes, and farmers’ market events. Local grocery stores are also participating by offering discounts on whole foods and labeling healthier options.

                                                                Written by Nikita M.

Climate change has a profound effect on the quality of healthy foods, with farmers and food experts worrying about declining crop yields and nutrient levels. This is especially affecting regions with limited resources in the southern hemisphere.

Rising temperatures and harsh weather are affecting crop growth and nutrient quality. Foods like fruits, vegetables, and grains are at risk as climate change disrupts their natural growing cycles. Experts warn that reduced soil quality and increased droughts are making healthy foods less reliable.

“The food we rely on for essential nutrients is being impacted in ways we never expected,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist studying the effects on agriculture. “We’re seeing declines in key nutrients, which could affect public health long-term.”

As climate change continues, experts recommend diversifying diets and supporting sustainable farming practices to help lower these negative effects.
Moldova Celebrates Christmas with Tradition and Warmth

Christmas in Moldova is a special holiday While some celebrate on December 25th, many Moldovans observe Orthodox Christmas on January 7th, following the Julian calendar. The holiday season brings a blend of religious practices, folk customs, and beloved family traditions across the country.

In Moldova, Christmas is not just a single day but a season of activities that includes caroling, feasting, and church services. Traditionally, groups of children and young people go door-to-door singing colinde , a practice that dates back centuries. They are often welcomed with treats and small gifts, as their songs are believed to bring blessings to the homes they visit.

“For us, Christmas is about reconnecting with family and our roots,” says Ion Popa, a father of three from a small village near Orhei. “We prepare traditional dishes together, and the children love going out to sing carols. It’s wonderful to see them enjoying the same customs I grew up with.”

While modern Christmas decorations and gift exchanges are increasingly popular in cities, Moldovans in rural areas hold fast to older customs, including ritual feasts and blessings led by local priests. This holiday season, community centers across Moldova have organized workshops on traditional crafts, helping young Moldovans rediscover the beauty of Christmas customs. With each passing year, Moldova’s Christmas traditions evolve but remain rooted in the warmth and togetherness that define the holiday spirit.

                                                                Written by Victor D.

Fast Food Chains Pack Up and Leave Moldova Amid Economic Shifts

Global fast food giants McBurger and Chick Fry are pulling out of Moldova. This sudden exit comes after years of rapid expansion across the country. The restaurants closed abruptly in major cities like Chișinău and Bălți on November 1, leaving both customers and employees shocked.

This exit is reportedly due to rising costs and decreasing consumer spending, which have made it harder for these chains to turn a profit in the region. The recent surge in local food preferences may have also contributed to their departure, as more Moldovans turn to traditional eateries.

“Our sales have been slowing down for months,” said John Smith, a manager at one of the closed locations. “It’s sad to see this happening, but we simply couldn’t keep up with the economic challenges here.”

While the decision is final, there’s hope that if economic conditions improve, some brands may return. Until then, local businesses are expected to fill the gap left by these international chains.

Written by Jasmina C.

Major Shift in Diet and Lifestyle Habits Sweeps Through Downtown Gym Community

Earlier this week, members of Downtown Fit Gym witnessed a dramatic change as regulars started cutting down on unhealthy foods and adopting healthier practices. The shift began on Monday morning, when gym-goers collectively committed to making changes to their eating and exercise routines.

The incident happened because Laura Myers, a long-time gym member, decided to give up sugary snacks and start meal prepping at home to improve her health. She and her friends made a pact to work out regularly, at least three times a week, as a way to stay motivated and support each other in reaching their fitness goals. The commitment to healthier habits and consistent exercise was driven by their desire to see positive changes and benefit from a healthier lifestyle.

The gym introduced workshops on balanced diets and effective exercises to boost participation. Though some struggled at first, others saw quick improvements. “Adjusting was tough, but seeing results kept me motivated,” said participant Mark Davis. The community is now considering extending the challenge to promote lasting healthy habits.

The sense of community has strengthened as members began sharing healthy recipes, organizing group workouts, and supporting each other’s progress. Trainers have noticed a boost in attendance and energy levels, with many participants eager to keep the momentum going. “It’s incredible to see everyone lifting each other up,” said trainer Marcus Lee. “This could mark the beginning of a lasting, positive shift in our gym culture.”

Made by Ciprian C.

It is a high-fat, adequate-protein, low-carbohydrate dietary therapy that forces the body to burn fat rather than carbohydrates. According to people who have tried this kind of diet, like Halle Berry, it helped them not only lose weight but also regulated their eating habits and made them feel healthier and more energized.

While initially a medical treatment, the keto diet has since become popular worldwide as a weight-loss and lifestyle diet.

Written by Daria G.

The Truth Behind Ultra-Processed Foods: How Convenience is Hurting Our Health

Experts are raising concerns about the impact of ultra-processed foods on public health as new findings reveal the risks of these convenient options. The study, published on Tuesday by the National Health Institute, examines the widespread consumption of ultra-processed foods in the United States and Europe. The research highlights the potential for these foods to contribute to various health issues, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.
Ultra-processed foods, which include items like instant noodles, packaged snacks, and sugary cereals, are highly processed to extend shelf life and improve taste. However, researchers argue that the additives, high sugar content, and chemical ingredients often found in these foods may lead to adverse health effects. The convenience of ultra-processed foods has made them a staple in many households, but this ease of access could be leading to increased rates of chronic health conditions, especially in low-income communities where healthier options may be less accessible.
"People are often unaware of the potential health risks associated with eating ultra-processed foods," explained Dr. Samantha Greene, a lead researcher on the study. "Our findings indicate that regular consumption of these foods can disrupt metabolic health and potentially shorten life expectancy."
The study’s findings have spurred calls for better labeling practices and increased public awareness campaigns to help consumers make more informed dietary choices. Health advocates suggest that by understanding the contents and potential health risks of ultra-processed foods, individuals can make better decisions that prioritize their long-term well-being.

Written by Bogdan C.

With fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, whole foods are appealing for their nutritional density and absence of additives found in processed foods.

Increasingly, people are aware of the health risks linked to processed foods, such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Whole foods, on the other hand, are rich in essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, which support digestion, immunity, and overall well-being.

“Whole foods nourish the body in a way that processed foods simply can’t replicate,” says Dr. Emily Hayes, a nutritionist and wellness advocate.

Social media also plays a role in the shift, with platforms like Instagram and TikTok popularizing vibrant, natural meals, especially among millennials and Gen Z. Though whole foods can sometimes be pricier and require more preparation time, consumers increasingly see them as worth the investment in health.

As public awareness grows, experts predict the demand for whole foods will continue to rise, marking a shift toward more natural, sustainable diets that prioritize wellness over convenience.

Written by Victor J.

FAST FOOD CHAINS LEAVE MOLDOVA.WHAT IS THE REASON ?

Several global fast-food chains are exiting Moldova due to a combination of economic and geopolitical factors, as well as declining profitability. One primary reason is the challenging economic environment. Rising costs, currency devaluation, and inflationary pressures have made operating in Moldova increasingly difficult.

Additionally, the ongoing regional instability, particularly due to tensions between Russia and Western nations, affects business confidence and supply chains across Eastern Europe. Some fast-food chains have faced difficulties in maintaining a steady flow of ingredients and supplies.

“We’re saddened to leave our customers here, but current conditions make it unsustainable for us to continue operating,” said a spokesperson for one of the exiting chains. “We hope to return when circumstances improve.” Many employees and loyal customers expressed disappointment, with some concerned about the loss of jobs and the impact on Moldova’s economic stability.

The closure of these fast-food chains reflects a larger trend among global retailers consolidating their locations and focusing on markets with stronger economic conditions. Many international businesses are prioritizing more stable locations or expanding digital services in their more profitable regions.

Written By Andreea M.
